NBA -- Pacers slip past Bulls, 107-105

CHICAGO -- Before a crowd of 19,704 at the United Center Friday night, the Chicago Bulls started the night with a strong gust but ended with a last-second gasp, losing to the Indiana Pacers, 107-105.

Things started off well for the Bulls as they jumped out to a quick and dominating lead early in the first half. Leading by as many as 18 points, the Bulls were well on their way to handing the Pacers a demoralizing loss. However, with eight minutes left, the Bulls lead started dwindling.

Indiana’s Domantas Sabonis and Tyreke Evans each made a pair of free throws, Sabonis grabbed two rebounds, and Victor Oladipo went on a mini-tear. In the span of two minutes, Oladipo produced a rebound, a steal, sank two free throws, pulled another rebound, and capped it off with a driving layup, to pull the Pacers within two, at 48-50. The rest of the half followed suit, with the Pacers quickly tying and then surpassing the Bulls going into halftime, 60-58.

The start of second half did not fare any better for the Bulls as they trailed for most of the third quarter. While Chicago’s Justin Holiday scored nine points in the third, he did not receive much help from his teammates, as only four other Bulls scored in the quarter. In comparison, the Pacers had all five starters plus two bench players score, including Oladipo, who notched another 8 points, 2 assists, and 2 rebounds in the quarter.

The Bulls started to find some life in the final quarter as they led by as much as 7 points, capped off by a 4-point play by Antonio Blakeney to tie the game at 105. Ultimately, however, the Bulls could not finish, as Pacers Darren Collison made a wide-open 19-foot jump shot with 18.5 seconds to pull ahead.

“It’s a process. We have things that are great to build upon, but it’s time to start converting. We need a complete, consistent 48-minute game without the lulls so that the game doesn’t come down to the last possession,” said Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg.

The Pacers’ Oladipo ended the night as the only player with a double-double, scoring 25 points and 14 rebounds.

The Pacers face the Boston Celtics at home tomorrow while the Bulls remain in Chicago to face the Houston Rockets.
