Concepcion gets new chance for redemption

By Dennis U. Eroa

THE ''Real Deal'' may yet become real.

In a last-ditch move to regain the luster of his checquered past, Bernabe ''Real Deal'' Concepcion is expected to become the newest addition to the growing stable of boxers under well-respected Saved by the Bell Promotion headed by Elmer Anuran.
While some observers agree that the 26-year-old Concepcion is past his prime following unfortunate setbacks in the past, Anuran, also owner of Touch Gloves Boxing Gym in Agoncillo, Batangas, firmly believes that Concepcion (32-6-1, 18 knockouts) still has the power and talent to finally nail a world title.

'' I personally watched his latest fight against battle-grizzled Eden Sonsona (32-6-2) in Mandaluyong. I can tell you, Abe remains the real deal,'' said Anuran. The Sonsona fight ended in a technical draw after referee Virgilio Garcia stopped the fight in the third due to a headbutt above Concepcion's eye.

The native of Virac, Catanduanes was once the apple of the eye not only of local but international promoters. Well built and powerful, Concepcion fought well outside the Philippines as he won the WBC International featherweight title, NABF super bantamweight title and the WBC Youth World super bantamweight crown.

But bad decisions along the way hampered the potential of Concepcion to be a superstar. Many remembered his flooring of then invincible Juan Manuel Lopez in the first round four years ago at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

JuanMa recovered from the shock of kissing the canvas to stop Concepcion in the second of the 12-round bout. But the world gained the full view of Concepcion’s power.
He also bowed to Mikey Garcia in Puerto Rico and Juan Carlos Martinez at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

But what was best remembered by fight fans was Concepcion’s bout against Steve Luevano last 2009 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The Pinoy power puncher fought very well before being disqualified when he punched and floored an ‘‘acting’’ Luevano when the bell ended in the seventh round.

Anuran’s unfazed. He thinks that Concepcion has already learned his lessons well.

‘‘Abe needs to be given another chance for redemption. He remains world class and SBB and his handlers will be here to support and guide him,’’ concluded Anuran.
