FIVE RP BOXERS BEATEN

By Ronnie Nathanielsz
PhilBoxing.com
18 Dec 2006

The triumphs of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and the brilliant gold medal performances by Violeto Payla and Joan Tipon at the Doha Asian Games have been unfortunately overshadowed by the publicity given by Games & Amusements Board Commissioner Alex Paglumotan for a plan to have former self-confessed drug user and hold-upper William Magahin resume fighting in Japan and the defeat of five boxers abroad.

The article of Paglumotan saying that Magahin was “ready to rumble” in a RP-Japan fight card promoted by Masuo Matsuoka Promotions has raised a howl of protest from boxing people who pointed out that the 36 year old Magahin hadn’t fought in ten
years, didn’t have a license and never took a GAB medical examination.

In the meantime two Filipino boxers were beaten in Thailand and three more lost in Australia making it a 0-5 weekend shutout.

Edmund Nonong Devilleres suffered his fourth straight defeat this year when he lost by a third round TKO to Pramuansak Posuwan who has held the WBO Asia Pacific super flyweight title since January 2002 and whose only loss was in a WBO world
title fight to Fernando Montiel in October last year in a close fight. The 38 year old Thai’s record is 34-1-1 with 19 knockouts.

In a light flyweight battle Armand de la Cruz dropped a six round decision to WBO Asia Pacific champion Kaichon Sor Vorapin who won the title with a sixth round KO over Rocky Fuentes in October 2004 and has a record of 23-9 with 7 KO’s while boxrec.com reports that southpaw de la Cruz has a record of 19-9-1 with 8 KO’s,

Over in New South Wales, Australia, Nonoy Gonzales retired in the sixth round of a twelve round title fight for the Australasian middleweight crown against Shannon Taylor, the 34 year old Australian with a record of 43-6-2 with 29 KO’s. Boxing writer Ray Wheatley reported that Gonzales who dropped to 21-19-1 with 11 KO’s took several solid shots to the head and was in no position to continue. At the time Gonzales retired he was down on the scorecards of all three judges in a
shutout.

Pedro Malco fought hard but lost a unanimous eight round decision to Nedal Hussein, the one-time tormentor of Pacquiao who improved to 42-4 with 26 KO’s while in a light welterweight clash Rolando Gerongco lost a unanimous six round decision in what Wheatley described as an action-packed six rounder to Leonardo Zappanigna who is now undefeated with 4 knockouts in 6 wins while Gerongco is listed with a record of 13-21-1, 7 KO’s by boxrec.com.
