FILIPINO BOXERS NAZARENO, JR. AND TALAPE IN SEPARATE TITLE BOUTS ABROAD THIS SATURDAY

By Atty. Danrex Joseph V. Tapdasan

All boxing fans here in the Philippines know that this Saturday, July 9, WBO # 2 Lightweight Mercito Gesta (21-0-1, 11 KOs) will fight Jorge Pimentel (23-11-0, 17 KOs) in an 8-round attraction underneath the WBA Lightweight Championship between Brandon Rios and Urbano Antillon in a huge boxing show promoted by Top Rank, Inc. at Home Depot Center, Carson, California USA.

Unknown to many Filipino boxing enthusiasts, 2 other Pinoy pugilists will travel from Manila all the way to separate continents and duke it out in separate 12-round regional title fights the same day that Gesta will fight in a venue, which is only a 2-hour drive away from his present residence in San Diego.

First, Dan Nazareno, Jr. (15-5-0, 11 KOs) of Rod Nazario Boxing Stable in Parañaque City will travel to the South American continent in order to face Mexican Luis Fernando Uribe (23-1-1, 18 KOs) for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Light Welterweight Title and vacant WBA Fedelatin Light Welterweight Title at the Plaza de Toros Eduardo Fontanet, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Nazareno was the former Pan Asian Boxing Association (PABA) Light Welterweight Champion. He won the title when he defeated the erstwhile Thai champion Manfa Luksaikongdin in a fight last September 20 of the previous year held in Thailand.

Second, Jun Talape (20-7-1, 8 KOs) of Elorde Shaw Boxing Gym in Mandaluyong City will fly to Europe to defend his WBC International Featherweight diadem against Romanian Viorel Simion (13-0-0, 5 KOs) at the Romexpo, Bucharest, Romania.

Talape is a former Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) super flyweight champion as well as the former 122-lbs. Champion of the Philippines. He won the WBC International Featherweight Championship via Unanimous Decision last March 5 against fellow Filipino Elmer Legaria in a fight held in Taguig City.

Nazareno and Talape will travel to enemy territory to represent the Philippines and most probably, will sing the Lupang Hinirang before battling the hometown fighters.

Win or lose, the most important thing is that they are prepared to fight their hearts out in front of the Mexicans and Romanians, respectively. Quitting should not be an option.
