FORMER WBC INT?L CHAMPION CHALLENGES SALUDAR

PhilBoxing.com

Froilan Saludar.

Gabriel ?Big Gunz? Pumar will lock horns with young prospect, Froilan ?Sniper? Saludar on July 30 at a venue to be determined later. As to the venue, Cebu and Imus, Cavite are having a virtual ?tug of war? in hosting the event. Local officials of both places have showed serious intentions of staging this huge boxing card

Saludar (12-0-1-9KOs), who just turned 22 years old 2 months ago, is a prot?g?e of Top Contender Boxing Gym managed by Joven Jimenez located at Imus, Cavite. Having repulsed his last 7 opponents all by the KO route and 4 of the 7 KO?s happening in the very first round, this undefeated boxing prospect born in the boxing-rich city of General Santos has a bright future ahead of him. His career is brilliantly steered by Cebu-based Sammy Gello-ani. The sniper is the current WBO World Youth Flyweight Champion and is highly ranked at No. 4 in the latest WBO World Rankings.

According to Gello-ani, should Saludar impressively win his fight against Pumar, he has already planned a September fight for him either for a world title eliminator or interim world title. The Saludar vs. Pumar tiff will be a 10-round non-title contest. When asked for the reason why the WBO World Youth title is not at stake, WBO Vice President Leon Panoncillo stated that it is because of a technicality. The Youth crown has an age limit of 24 years old and Pumar being 25 years old at the night of the fight, he is not qualified to battle for the Youth diadem.

Saludar comes from the brood of young champion boxers. His brothers Rey and Vittorio are highly ranked in the world amateur boxing scene in their respective weight classes. Rey was an Asian Games Gold Medalist while Vittorio won the Bronze in the same meet in another weight category.

Pumar (15-5-1-9KOs), born and raised in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu province and nicknamed Bonbon, is the same fighter who rocked the whole Cebu province when last March 31, 2006, he won the WBC International minimumweight title from Tshepo Lefele at the latter?s home country of South Africa by a spectacular seventh-round knockout in front of the stunned South Africans in the city of Johannesburg. At the young age of 20 at that time, Pumar was suddenly touted as the next great world champion coming out of Cebu. He was awarded as the Boxer of the Month in the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) March 2006 line-up of awards. Not only that, the city mayor of Lapu-Lapu City at that time, Arturo ?Boy? Radaza?, granted Pumar with a whopping P300,000.00 cash incentive for putting their city in the world boxing map.

However, the euphoria for Pumar?s star-potential was short-lived. He lost his next 2 fights in South Africa and decided to fight exclusively in Japan for 2 years (2009 and 2010). Pumar is aching to revive his previously promising career and is looking to upset the 22-year old Saludar. The 3-year age gap between the 2 protagonists is not too huge but Pumar?s experience will surely be a problem for Saludar, while the latter will obviously be ready so as not to derail his impending stardom. Saludar sure does not want to taste the disappointing derailment to the career of Pumar.

If Saludar wins, he is set for a world title fight not later than 2012. However, if Pumar spoils Saludar?s plans, Bonbon?s once-promising career is sure to get a second chance.

This promises to be a long war between 2 young Filipino boxers with great skills.

The fight will be staged by SGG Promotions in cooperation with Sampson Boxing LLC and covered by giant Philippine TV network GMA 7.
