Pacquiao: When I shook the hand of Marquez before the decision was read in our 2nd fight, I was not about to congratulate him

Manila, Philippines - During the Press Conference at the Manila Hotel a few moments ago, this writer was given the opportunity to ask the first question from the press row. As a background, I reminded WBO Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao that during their second fight wherein Marquez was defending his WBC 130-lbs. title. When the ring announcer was about to read the 3rd scorecard before announcing the decision he went to the corner of Marquez and was motioning to shake the latter?s hand. Then, when the announcer said, ?and the new WBC superfeatherweight champion?, Pacquiao appeared very surprised and suddenly celebrated. Many boxing aficionados as well as fans interpreted that gesture of Pacquiao as already congratulating Marquez and accepting defeat. However, the legislator from Saranggani Province explained that he did not shake the hand of Marquez to congratulate him but that was a usual gesture for him to shake the hand of all his opponents after all his fights.
The press conference was the first part of the World Press Tour in Manila. The second part of the tour will be the open-to-the-public event at Quirino Grandstand which is expected to attract at least 100,000 fans. The Manila-leg of the World Press Tour is organized by Solar Sports in cooperation with Top Rank, Inc. The TV coverage was aired exclusively by GMA Network. After the stop in Manila, the 2 protagonists will travel to New York, Los Angeles and lastly in Mexico to complete the World Press Tour.
