ACCRA, GHANA HOSTS A TRIPLE WPBF CHAMPIONSHIP ON JULY 31

By Atty. Danrex Joseph V. Tapdasan
PhilBoxing.com
13 Jul 2010

On July 31, Saturday, 3 vacant title belts of the World Professional Boxing Federation (WPBF) will be up for grabs between 6 ring gladiators from 4 different countries.

In the main event, Braimah “Bukom Banku” Kamoko (19W-0L-0D-14KOs) of Ghana will battle Hector Javier “El Artillero” Velazco (37W-8L-1D-16KOs) of Argentina for the
vacant WPBF Light Heavyweight Championship.

The main event is a contest between an undefeated fighter in Kamoko and a grizzled veteran in Velazco, 37, the latter having fought the likes of boxing superstars Arthur Abraham and Felix Sturm, to name a few. This will be a tough test for the 29-year old Kamoko.

The first co-main event is the fight between Ghana’s Joshua “Bukom Tsatsu” Okine (19W-4L-1D-13KOs) and Uzbekistan’s Muhammad Abdullaev (20W-3L-0D-14KOs) for the vacant WPBF Welterweight Title. Abdullaev, 36, is the 2000 Sydney Olympics Gold Medalist and the same person who fought Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden, New York, USA last June 11, 2005. Okine at the peak of his career at age 30, will have his hands full against one of the best boxers who came out of Uzbekistan.

The second co-main event is the battle for the vacant WPBF Light Welterweight Belt between Albert “Tornado” Mensah (21W-3L-1D-10KOs) of Ghana versus Karen Tevosyan (15W-2L-3D-9KOs) of Russia. Mensah is on a 13-fight winning streak in a span of 5 years. This is Tevosyan’s first fight outside Russia.

The 3 championship fights are evenly-matched and will surely create fireworks at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in downtown Accra, the capital of Ghana. The venue is a multi-use, 45,000 all-seater stadium, mostly used for association football matches. Originally known as the Accra Sports Stadium, the stadium was renamed after Ohene Djan, the country's first Director of Sports, in 2004. Nonetheless, the stadium is considered by many to be the National Stadium of Ghana.

The huge boxing show will be promoted by Goldenmike Boxing Promotions headed by its President, Mike L.A. Tetteh. Supervising the 3 championship fights will be Filipino Dante S. Almario, a respected personality in Philippine boxing. He is currently the WPBF Vice President for Asia-Pacific.

The World Professional Boxing (WBPF) is a relatively young but already a respected and popular boxing organization throughout the boxing world. Founded in 2001, its history can be traced back to its' predecessors, the World Boxing Syndicate (WBS)
and the World Boxing Empire(WBE). On October 20, 2005, the United States Boxing Council (USBC) became affiliated with the WPBF. The WBE was renamed The World Professional Boxing Federation (WPBF) on July 6, 2006.

The President of WPBF-USBC is David Young.
