'BOOM BOOM', DAPUDONG IN "PINOY PRIDE 3"

By Salven L. Lagumbay

ALA fighter Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and Braveheart warriour Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong will headline the huge "Pinoy Pride 3" boxing extravaganza on January 29 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel next year.

In a press conference to formally launch the event at Kevin Cook's Sports Bar and Grill yesterday, ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer informed the media that aside from Bautista and Dapudong, also seeing action are Jason Pagara, newly-crowned PABA champ Roli Gasca and the highly entertaining Jojo Intor.

Ex-WBC silver champ Dapudong, who will be seeing action for the first time under the ALA Promotions banner, flew in yesterday accompanied by his manager former North Cotabato Governor Manny Pinol just to attend the formal launching of the event, and immediately flew back to Davao hours later to continue his training under Braveheart trainer Noli Pinol.

Also attending yesterday's presser were Pagara, Gasca, and ALA trainer Edmund Villamor, who emphasized that Bautista will be a much improved fighter when he takes on Alejandro Barrera in the mainer in a grudge rematch.

Since their last outing, Bautista has not seen action, while Barrera was busy having fought and won against Arturo Hernandez via fifth-round knockout in Queretaro, Mexico.

Trainer Edmund Villamor, however, was confident Bautista will again win this time following that controversial stoppage by the ring physician of their first fight.

"We have made adjustments for this fight. Boom Boom will be more focused, and he will be using more movements and will keep a good eye on Barrera the whole time," Villamor told the media.

Dapudong, who will face Indonesia's Sofyan Effendi in a ten-round dukeout, is confident he will notch another win in this fight following his loss to Mexican Wilbert Uican in September.

His manager Manny Pinol, who hooked up with the ALA Promotions following a thorough consultation with his ten brothers, said that he feels ALA Promotions has the capability to promote well not just his fighters but also all the other Filipino and foreign fighters under its wings.

"I believe ALA Promotions has the capacity, and I hope it will go out and become the biggest Asian promotional company that can compete with Puerto Rico's PR Best, with Mexico's Zanfer and even Japan's Teiken of Mr Honda," said Pinol.

The boxing journalist-turned-politician-turned banana planter and goat champion breeder also emphasized that from now on, ALA Promotions will have a say on the next opponents of his fighters. Aside from Dapudong, other Braveheart fighters under the ALA banner are WBO no. 2 Rommel Asenjo, world rated Lorenzo Villanueva and Rolando Magbanua, Jermie Jabel, as well as the Lumacad brothers.

"We have a sustainable boxing program in North Cotabato, and whatever fight ALA gives to us, we will make sure we will prepare the boys and they will be ready to fight," added Pinol.

The rest of the card pit Pagara against Billy Sumba of Indonesia, while PABA champ Gasca takes on Joash Apericio of Cagayan de Oro City.

Sensational entertainer Jojo Intor takes on Albert Villacampa; Rey Melligen goes up against Robert Arcala, while Zaldy Aroa battles Robert Awitin in the curtain-raiser.

NOTES. Aside from the January 29 event, ALA Promotions is also bringing a two-night event on Jan. 15 and 16 at the IT Park. Headlining one of the cards is an exciting shootout between Braveheart's Rolando Magbanua and Bon Jovi Canillas...It was nice to see the Sports Exchange Bar holding a kid's party prior to the ALA presscon. At least the place is not just a bar, but wholesome as to allow kids to its premises...Roli Gasca says he's "inspired" to fight here again, while "Boom Boom" says he's going to fight furious after an ex had spread photos of him and her in intimate situations...Here's hoping Jimrex Jaca sees action in the next Pinoy Pride event. If not, hope to see him in Pinoy Pride 10...Talks of the controversial stoppage of Boom Boom's fight against Barrera continues to linger up to this day. One observer says that was such a huge mistake to stop the fight, while forum members continue to bash the physician involved. Easy please on the doctor. Dont worry, Im sure the GAB will assign another doctor for the rematch based on forum requests. Who are we to blame the doctor, he was nearest to the cut fighter. Just as doctors should not dip their fingers on the decision of the boxing judges...
