Golovkin vs. Geale Undercard Results from New York

PhilBoxing.com

New York - A meager three-fight undercard welcomed boxing fans at Madison Square Garden tonight before the TV (HBO) portion of the fights featuring a Middleweight championship match between Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Geale and a Heavyweight Title eliminator between Bryant Jennings and Mike Perez.

RODRIGUEZ KO'S SOUTHERN IN 1

In the opener, welterweight prospect Julian Rodriguez of Hasbrouck Heights NJ, barely broke a sweat and stopped Yankton Southern (4-6, 4 KOs) of Springfield, MO just 43 seconds into their scheduled 4 round bout.

The former and possibly future spar mate of Manny Pacquiao attained the knockout by a body shot against a hapless Southern who winced in pain on his knees as Referee Gary Rosado counted him out.

Rodriguez improved his young record to a perfect 5 and 0 after the win in his first fight at the "Big Room."

HERNANDEZ-HARRISON DECISIONS ACUNA

Dusty Hernandez-Harrison of Washington DC scored a Unanimous Decision nod over Wilfredo Acuna (15-14, 12 KOs) of Managua, Nicargua in 8 rounds of their welterweight match.

The undefeated boxer from the nation's capital failed to place his opponent in the floor despite hurting him numerous times in the fight. Acuna despite being outmatched, survived the bout on his feet.

Now 23 and 0 (12 KOs), Hernandez- Harrison also earned a perfect mark (80-72) in all of the three judges at ringside against an opponent who was never a threat in the entire fight.

AFOLABI MARS CAPUTO SMITH AFTER 3

Cruiserweight Ola Afolabi (21-3-4, 10 KOs)of London, England roughed up American fighter, Anthony Caputo Smith (15-4, 10 KOs) of Philadelphia, en route to a 3rd round TKO victory in the third and final bout of the undercard before the HBO telecast.

Afolabi bloodied his opponent in the 2nd with uppercuts and straights that produced a bad cut on Caputo Smith's left eye. The American survived the second round despite the cut and several hard blows to his body and head but was not too lucky in the next round.

Caputo-Smith was knocked down twice by Afolabi with hard head shots that painted the Philly fighter's face a bright red. He beat both of Referee Steve Smoger's counts but he was hurting and bleeding heavily after the second knockdown.

The physician and officials at ringside stopped the fight after seeing the boxer in his corner after the third awarding the TKO victory to the visiting fighter from the United Kingdom.
