EAGLE FACES UNBEATEN YAEGASHI By Joe Koizumi PhilBoxing.com Wed, 28 Mar 2007 TOKYO, JAPAN -- WBC 105-pound champ Eagle Kyowa (17-1, 6 KOs), a Thailander living with a Japanese wife in Tokyo, will put his belt on the line against unbeaten prospect Akira Yaegashi (6-0, 5 KOs), former amateur champ, in Yokohama, Japan, on June 4. It was publicly announced with both contestants in attendance on Monday. Yaegashi, ex-OPBF champ who recently renounced his regional belt to prepare for this world title crack, will attempt to break the national record to reach the world throne in a shortest professional career, as only ex-WBC bantam ruler Joichiro Tatsuyoshi and current WBA super-fly kingpin Nobuo Nashiro previously seized the world belt in the eighth pro bout. Promoter Hideyuki Ohashi, ex-WBC/WBA minimum champ, said, "My manager Kenji Yonekura failed to win the world flyweight title from Pascual Perez in his seventh bout in 1959, and I myself wasn't successful in acquiring the WBC light-fly belt from Korean Jungkoo Chang also in the seventh game in 1986. I hope Yaegashi will make the third attempt of our stable to win it in his seventh outing." Eagle, four years his senior at 28, wrested the WBC diadem from Jose Antonio Aguirre of Mexico by a lopsided decision in Tokyo in January 2004, but forfeited it in his second defense against Mexican Isaac Bustos because of a injured right shoulder in December that year. Eagle, however, regained the same belt by outscoring Japanese speedster Katsunari Takayama (current WBA interim 105-pound champ) in August 2005. Eagle, in his second reign, already kept his throne three times by defeating Ken Nakajima (TKO7), Rodel Mayol (W12) and Lorenzo Trejo (W12). They had an experience of exchanging gloves three years ago when Yaegashi was still a university student and amateur boxer. Yaegashi, handled by Ohashi, said, $B!H(BEagle was formidable at that time, but lately seems to slow down, so I wish to conquer him and win the world belt from him.$B!I(B The more experienced Eagle may be a prefight favorite due to his longer career, but Yaegashi is a fast-rising prospect who boasts of speed, power and heart. It will be an interesting encounter to be presented by Ohashi Promotions. (3-27-07) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Joe Koizumi. |
