PACMAN VOWS TO FIGHT FOR A BETTER WORLD! PhilBoxing.com Fri, 11 Apr 2014 ![]() Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao uses media attention to promote something he believes in. Wearing a white shirt with "FIGHT FOR A BETTER WORLD", he was greeted by a group of Fil-AM doctors headed by Dr. Renato de la Cruz, President of Kiamba Sarangani Development Foundation, Inc. (KSDFI-USA) outside the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. The group belonging to Tau Mu Sigma Phi was delighted when Pacman actually took his time to sign the banner and posed for group pictures. The banner reads" Manny You Are Our Champion Forever. Go beat Bradley!" It is recalled that Pacquiao was hailed by former DENR Secretary Lito Atienza for renewing his vow for environmental protection after the boxer's return from a bout with Oscar de la Joya years ago. As a known supporter for the protection and preservation of the Philippine Eagle and the Tarsier, Paquiao was named "Champion for the Environment" by the DENR in 2007. Pacquiao is reported to have founded the organization Task Force Ligtas Kinaiyahan (Save Nature) and was quoted as saying, ?we should rather talk about how we can contribute to the government?s efforts in solving poverty like promoting proper management of our natural resources,? when asked about politics. He won a seat in Congress for the District of Sarangani in 2010. According to reports, poverty is prevalent in mining communities in the Philippines. Case in point is the mining municipality of Bataraza in Palawan and host to Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation, which remains to be among the poorest municipalities of the Province of Palawan, lagging behind in the delivery of even the most basic services like water, electricity, education and transportation. After more than 30 years of operation, mining has not reportedly improved the lives of the people in the area. To quote No to Mining in Palawan: " What has mining done to our land? It has caused destruction of forests and wildlife as in the case of the land use changes in the Rio Tuba Nickel Mines; water pollution in the affected coastal area of Colandorang Bay in Balabac due to an abandoned and un-rehabilitated copper mine; soil erosion like in the case of Infanta Mining in Brooke?s Point; the non-rehabilitation of mined out areas of Silica Mining in Roxas and the mining of nickel and chromite by Trident Mining Corporation and Olympic Mines in Narra." It is reported that there are 2,180 mining applications presently pending in various DENR regional offices in the Philippines and Region 12 which has jurisdiction over Sarangani has more than it's fair share. " Pacquiao's passion and commitment to save the environment is seen in various videos showing him campaign for No To Mining In Palawan", Dr. Renato de la Cruz said. "I believe the honorable Congressman will take alternative and sustainable means to improve the poverty situation in his District and will pass the Bill for a Mining Free Sarangani. To me, this is what "fighting for a better world means." ![]() Filipino superstar and congressman Manny Pacquiao signs the banner prepared by Kiamba Sarangani Development Foundation, Inc.
