PHILIPPINES, MOROCCO, VIETNAM LADY BOXERS TOURNEY IN BAGUIO PhilBoxing.com Mon, 07 Apr 2014 Baguio City - Women boxers of the National Teams of three countries - Morocco, Vietnam and the Philippines figured in a lively, action-packed and well-fought mini-tournament in this summer capital Sunday. The event, organized by the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines in cooperation with PLDT, Maynilad and the City Government of Baguio, was held at the People's Park (Malcolm Square) in the heart of Baguio City. Every available space in the area was filled with people-city dwellers aS well as local and foreign toursits who are here enjoying the cool mountain air. ABAP President Ricky Vargas, who is also chief executive of Maynilad, motored up from Manila to oversee the tri-nation competition. ABAP Vice-President Peter Rey Bautista, former mayor of the city, also graced the occasion. "This is actually part of the training camp we are hosting with the help of the PSC at Teachers Camp here. The Vietnamese and Moroccan federations asked if we could accommodate them and we did. They'll be here about a month. To simulate tournament conditions, we worked with the City Government to stage this. We're happy to see it attracted so many people!", Vargas enthused. While no prizes or even medals were given out, the boxers from the three countries gave the public a lot to cheer about. Most applauded were the matches that involved 2013 SEA Games silver medalistNesthy Petecio (PH) and Luu Thi Duyen of Vietnam, who won the gold medal in the same SEAG. Petecio dominated the bout and earned the nod of the judges via unanimous decion. Also winning a unanimous decision was World Champion and three-time SEAG gold medal winner Josie Gabuco over Zahra Ezzehraouni of. Morocco. It was a slam-bang affair but the Puerto Princesa lass used wiles and experience to pull off the win. There were 8 other matches featuring women boxers from the three countries. After the event, Vargas hosted a sumptuous Chinese dinner for all the participants, where the boxers who slugged it out intensely during the bouts showed great sportsmanship and camaraderie by sharing tables and food, taking numerous photos and breaking out into bursts of laughter despite the Language barriers. Ex-Mayor Bautista said "This is simply amazing! We can learn a lot from the way boxers behave. We should have more of this". As a matter of fact, the University of Baguio, which is owned by the former chief executive's family, is already arranging to host a similar event before the foreign teams leave third week of April. ![]() |
