NBA -- Knicks look to sing a new tune against the Jazz

PhilBoxing.com

NEW YORK - The New York Knicks (22-40) will host the struggling Utah Jazz (21-40) on Friday March 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Knicks are in 11th place in the weak Eastern Conference, 5 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot with 20 games remaining in the season.

The Atlanta Hawks have made things easier for teams to catch them by losing 12 of their last 13 games. Cleveland and Detroit are also trying to catch Atlanta for the final playoff spot and the right to play either Miami or Indiana in the first round.

The Knicks' slim playoff chances are still alive, and with games against the Cavaliers, Philadelphia, Boston and NBA-worst Milwaukee following Utah, they might be able gain some ground this coming week.

"I think this year has been an unexpected struggle for us," forward Amare Stoudemire told reporters. "We had high expectations going into the season. At the same time, it builds character. So you've got to stay optimistic and stay focused and positive about things and get things turned around."

New York won 54 games last season and reached the conference semifinals. The Knicks showed flashes of that level of play on Wednesday night in Minnesota, ending a seven-game losing streak with a 118-106 victory over the Timberwolves.

Carmelo Anthony scored 33 points and Raymond Felton broke out of his slump with 18. Tyson Chandler had 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Stoudemire added 18 points and eight boards in New York's first win since beating New Orleans on Feb. 19.

Stoudemire joined Anthony and Chandler as a starter for the second straight game, and that trio helped limit All-Star forward Kevin Love to one point in the second half.

The Jazz have lost four straight matchups in the series, including three in a row at Madison Square Garden.

The Jazz dropped to 7-24 away from home this season, which is the worst in the Western Conference, with their 104-91 loss at Washington against the Wizards on Wednesday.

The Knicks and Jazz will tipoff at 7:30 pm EST at Madison Square Garden.
