London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga scored another scintillating win in the WSB, the semi-professional league staged by the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
The World Series of Boxing features teams from 12 different countries but whose composition is complemented by boxers from other countries. Barriga was conscripted by the Italia Thunder, which is sponsored by the high-fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana.
Saturday evening, the Thunder faced the USA Knockouts in Milan and Barriga's fight against Chinese boxer Lu Bin of USA was described by boxing website boxingnews24.com as "an epic clash between two of the WSB's hottest up-and-coming light flyweights".
WSB matches are fought over 5 rounds as opposed to 3 rounds in the AIBA Open Boxing (AOB, amateur boxing).
His victory gave the Italian franchise a close 3-2 edge in their 5-match encounter with the Americans.
With the win over Lu, Barriga now has 3 wins in as many outings in the WSB. He has shot up to number 2 in his weight division's rankings, behind Yosbany Veitia of the Havana Domadores, who has chalked up 5 victories. He also helped keep the Thunder at the #1 spot in Group A.
Barriga's earlier victims were Leandro Blanc of Argentina and Germany's Ovidiu Berceanu.
ABAP president Ricky Vargas expressed elation over the 20 year old sensation from Davao del Norte's latest achievement saying "this augurs well for Barriga's campaign to book another Olympic stint. His exposure in WSB also gives him maximum exposure and training which will serve him well in his attempt to land a spot in the Philippine team for the Asian Games this September."
Barriga took a break from the WSB last December to campaign for his home team, the Philippines, and wIn a gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.
He returned to his training camp in Assisi, Italy January 2.
