Former WBA World Champion Yodsanan Sityodtong Heads Up Boxing Program at Evolve MMA in Singapore PhilBoxing.com Fri, 07 Feb 2014 Yodsanan Sityodtong, also known as Yodsanan 3k Battery, was one of Thailand?s best boxers winning the WBA super featherweight title in 2002 and defending it successfully three times. He has an outstanding record of 57-3-1 with 46 of his wins coming by KO but these days ?The Thai Tyson? can be found coaching fighters, corporate clients and martial arts enthusiasts from all walks of life at Evolve MMA in Singapore. Yodsanan heads up the boxing program at the gym which has been voted as the best in Asia by experts from Fox Sports, CNN and Yahoo. The five star air conditioned facility is a far cry from the places where he used to train as a fighter but the 39 year old is enjoying life away from the ring, ?The big difference is that in Thailand people don?t normally train boxing or Muay Thai unless they are fighters, but in Singapore a lot of people who have normal jobs like to learn not because they can make money by fighting but because it makes them fit and healthy. I learned a lot during my boxing career and I enjoy being able to share my knowledge with people here in Singapore,? he said. Much has been made of the rivalry between boxing and MMA with forecasts that the advent of the former would lead to the demise of the latter proving completely misguided but Yodsanan, who has fought twice in the cage for ONE FC, does not see it as a rivalry, ?There are many MMA fighters here and I help them with their boxing every day, because boxing is an important part of MMA. In Singapore MMA is very popular and a lot of people go to watch ONE FC but there are many boxing fans too and there have been world title fights here and even Manny Pacquiao wants to fight here,? he said. There was a period when both Yodsanan and Pacquiao were fighting for world titles in the 130 lbs division and a matchup was discussed but, to the great regret of the Thai boxer, negotiations did not get off the ground, ?It would have been a good fight because we both have a lot of knockouts on our record. I don?t know what happened, I wanted to fight him and it is a shame that the fight never happened.? Yodsanan, who defended his PABA 130 lbs strap 19 times before becoming a world champion, retired despite being on a 13 fight winning streak when he simply ran out of opponents. He does not completely rule out a comeback but says that his coaching commitments have taken over, ?I don?t drink or smoke and I am in very good condition, I believe I could definitely fight again but I am very busy helping all my students at Evolve, that is my priority and it means I don?t have time to train myself but I enjoy being able to help other people to learn the art of boxing,? he said. Yodsanan is very hands on working with the Evolve MMA Fight Team which includes famous mixed martial artists such as Shinya Aoki, Ben Askren and Rafael Dos Anjos and always corners Thai boxers when they come to compete in Singapore, ?A career in boxing can be hard and most people at Evolve MMA want to learn but not to fight because they already have jobs and don?t want to get hurt. However I still help my Thai friends when they come to fight in Singapore like Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo who fought Chris John here,? he said. Boxers don?t always fare well in retirement and even Golden Boy founder Oscar De La Hoya has had some well publicized problems buy Yodsanan is thriving in his new career and is one of the most popular and sought after trainers at Asia?s top martial art?s camp. Plenty of professional people or students like to let off some steam by getting a few rounds on pads in after school or work, even if they have no intention of stepping into the ring. Not everyone gets to work out with a former world champion, but at Evolve MMA boxing enthusiasts from all walks of life are lucky to be able to learn from the legendary Yodsanan.
