Fernando Montiel: I Love the People in the Philippines PhilBoxing.com Wed, 21 Feb 2007 CEBU CITY -- The "Moment of Truth" card brings WBO super featherweight champion Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel his first visit to the Philippines. Montiel fights WBO No. 1 super featherweight contender Z "The Dream" on Feb. 24 to retain the crown. But sometimes, somehow some threats bring pleasant situations. "I love the people here in the Philippines. They are friendly," observed Montiel in an interview over breakfast at the Rajah Park Hotel near Fuente Osme?a Circle (FOC) in Cebu City. Since the team Montiel arrived on Feb 17, Montiel jogs inside FOC every morning at around 9:00 in the morning with eldest brother Pedro. Together with his father, trainer-manager Manuel Montiel Sr., his other brothers Eduardo and Montiel Jr. join him in his third defense of the championship crown. Montiel was introduced to boxing very early in his life. "I grew with boxing all around me. My brothers are boxers. All the 12 men in my family and relatives are all boxers," Montiel replied. As early as five years old, he fought in amateur boxing, and had been to Japan and the United States in his young campaign. A fan of Muhammad Ali, Montiel believed that he is ready to face Gorres on the ring and will come out winning to bring his championship belt back to Mexico. But this leaves us wondering how he would accomplish that when not a fight of Gorres he was able to watch in the past. "He doesn't have to see Gorres fight to win the bout," the elder Montiel Sr. replied. "Fernando knows how to adapt his strategy to his opponent." Montiel insisted that not even hostile crowd cannot prevent him from defeating Gorres and keep his championship on. "Once I climb on the ring to fight," he said, "there will be me and Gorres there. No one else." The final press conference proceeds as scheduled on Feb 22 at 12 noon in a new venue at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino Cebu City, Lahug. Press accreditations are still open. Accredited ringside photographers include Lito Tecson of Cebu Daily News, Cyril Camporedondo of The Freeman, Victor Kintanar of Reuters, Ed de la Vega of Philboxing.com, Dong Secuya of Mannypaquiao.ph, Scott Mallon of TheSweetScience.com, Alex Badayos of Sun.Star Cebu Daily, and Arni Aclao of Superbalita. Meanwhile, to make the triple World boxing championship bouts available to the greatest number of Cebuanos, starting today until Feb 23, a ticket booth will be installed at the main gate of the Cebu City Sports Complex. Boxing fans who have difficulty accessing the authorized tickets outlets will have their chance of buying tickets at their convenience. The ticket booth will be open from 10 AM to 6 PM. |
