The 74th World Tournament of 14.1 August 4-9th in New York City : Filipino Pros Aim to Make History PhilBoxing.com Sat, 25 Jan 2014 ![]() New York City, NY - The World Tournament of 14.1 will take place once more in New York City for the third year straight. Dragon Promotions and Dr. Michael Fedak are pleased to announce the 74th production of the oldest billiard event in the world on August 4th-9th, 2014. An even bigger star studded field is expected this year with Steinway Billiards Cafe once more hosting the world's grandest straight pool championship. Past Filipino top finishers have included Efren Reyes (Silver Medal 2012), Francisco Bustamante (Bronze Medal 2013 & Silver Medal 2009), Dennis Orcullo (Bronze Medal 2008), and Alex Pagulayan (Bronze Medal 2011) . Legendary Jose Parica and Warren Kiamco are also past top finishers. To date, no Filipino has ever won the World Tournament of 14.1 in it's 101 year history. "The World Tournament has extended the history of the venerable game of 14.1 well into the 21st century. Thorsten Hohmann is now this century's three time champion and Darren Appleton's dramatic 200-and-out game was the kind of "you had to be there" moment that makes it all worthwhile", says Dr. Michael Fedak who has presented this event for five years now. "It's undeniable that this is one of the most looked forward to events of the year for pool enthusiasts. The amount of fan letters and support builds every year that it's overwhelming and rewarding for us", says Charlie Williams, Executive Producer of the World Tournament. Last year's event had standing room only crowds on most of the days. And there were many firsts such as USA's champion Shane Van Boening entering for the first time, China's first 14.1 player in Can Wang, and of course the record shattering performance from England's Darren Appleton in the semi-finals when he ran a perfect 200 against Filipino World Champion Francisco Bustamante. DVDs of last year's events can be acquired by clicking onto this link http://www.3cushioncues.com/DVDs/cat2041798_1871329.aspx or call 707-533-4727 . "New York City has the best straight pool fans in the world!", said Thorsten Hohmann last year when he won his 3rd World Tournament crown. Germany's Hohmann will not only be chasing his fourth World 14.1 crown, but could be the first ever back to back champion of the event, which has not been done in this millenium. Meanwhile, last year's silver medalist Darren Appleton now has a bronze, a silver, and will be chasing the elusive Gold for his possible first. USA's John Schmidt will try for his second Gold with top Americans Johnny Archer, Max Eberle, and Charlie Williams right behind him. "We are very pleased to be back at Steinway Billiards once more. New York City is the perfect home for the World Tournament where the fans really appreciate the artistry of 14.1", said Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions. ![]() |
