MANILA (PNA) Dec. 1 -- Reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) world lightflyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes and WBO world minimumweight champion Merlito ?Tiger? Sabillo retained their titles in contrasting fashions in the double main event of the Pinoy Pride XXIII last Saturday night at the SMART Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Nietes used his quick and solid punches to knockout Mexican Sammy Gutierrez in 2:58 of the third round to improve his record to 32 wins, 18 KOs with only one loss and four draws.
Gutierrez twice knocked down by Nietes in the opening round but was saved by the bell. Gutierrez was again almost sent down to the canvas by Nietes? fiery attack.
In the third round, Nietes started with a left-right combination to send Gutierrez to the ropes before landing the perfect right to the chin to end the fight.
Sabillo, on the other hand, only settled a split draw against the younger and hungry Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua to retain his crown.
Sabillo started strong but Buitrago came back strong in the final five rounds. Judge Levi Mart?nez of USA scored the fight 115-113 for Buitrago while judge Joerg Milke of Germany gave it for Sabillo at 115-113.
But Japanese judge Takeshi Shimakawa saw it a draw at 114-all.
Four other fighters from the ALA Boxing Stable also prevailed.
WBO International Mila Melindo, WBO International lightweight king Jason Pagara and former WBO ASPAC bantamweight champion AJ Banal won all via unanimous decisions.
Melindo beat former WBA world lightweight king Jose Alfredo Rodriguez of Mexico, Pagara outclassed Vladimir Baez of Dominican Republic and Banal outpointed Lucian Gonzales of Puerto Rico.
WBO Oriental lightweight champion Jimrex Jaca knocked out Wellem Reyk of Indonesia in 2:24 of the first round of their six-rounder match.
?We all dedicate our wins for the victims of typhoon Yolanda,? said Nietes, who is aiming to surpass the record of the late Gabriel "Flash" Elorde as the longest reigning Filipino world champion for seven years next year.
