PINOY PRIDE XXIII: NIETES SPEWS VENOM AND STOPS GUTY

PhilBoxing.com

QUEZON CITY ? Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes extended his reign as WBO world light flyweight champion with an impressive third round TKO win over Mexican challenger Sammy ?Guty? Gutierrez.

Nietes had a fast start and decked Gutierrez twice in the opening round. Nietes moved in for the kill but the bell saved Gutierrez when he was being pummeled with his back to the ropes.

Nietes remained aggressive in the second round and had no difficulty landing power punches.

In the third, Nietes hurt Gutierrez with a left hook and finished the job with a well timed right straight that sent the Mexican to the canvas on all fours. He tried to get up but Referee Celestino Ruiz brought an end to the carnage at the 2:58 mark.

Nietes was the WBO minimumweight champ from 2007-2011 and acquired the light flyweight belt by unanimous nod against Ramon Garcia Hirales of Mexico last October 8,2011.

Nietes scored three knockdowns against Rodriguez en route to a third round stoppage.

In the co-main event, Merlito ?Tiger? Sabillo retained his WBO minimumweight title against mandatory challenger Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua when their fight ended in a split draw after twelve rounds. (See separate story)

Melindo (R) connects against Rodriguez.

Milan ?El Metodico? Melindo returned to his winning ways with a lopsided twelve round unanimous decision victory over Jose Alfredo ?Torito? Rodriguez of Mexico. It was the usual boxing exhibition that fans had come to expect from Melindo; showcasing his vast array of accurate combinations and counters throughout the twelve rounder. Judges Gil Co and Samson Libres had it 119-109, Salven Lagumbay 118-110.

With the WBO International flyweight title in his hands, Melindo begins his quest to climb up the rankings and get another world title shot. Melindo lost a unanimous decision to WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada in Macau last July.

Pagara vs Baez.

Jason ?El Ni?o? Pagara obtained a one-sided unanimous verdict against a tough but outclassed Vladimir Baez of the Dominican Republic. Baez took hard rights from Pagara in the early rounds but continued to move forward.

Blood trickled from Baez? nose past the halfway mark and in the seventh round, Pagara sent the Dominican?s mouthpiece flying with a vicious hook. Pagara landed at will but Baez managed to hear the final bell. The scores from judges Greg Ortega ? 98-91, Salven Lagumbay ? 99-90 and Joerge Milke ? 98-90 underscored Pagara?s dominance.

Banal vs Gonzalez.

AJ ?Bazooka? Banal had too much in his arsenal and beat Puerto Rican opponent Lucian Gonzalez by unanimous decision. The scores ? 98-92, 98-92 and 100-90.

Jaca KOs Reyk in the first round.

Jimrex ?Executioner? Jaca used a sneaky shot to the midsection to knockout Wellem Reyk of Indonesia in the first round. Time 2:24. For the preliminary bouts ? Justo Bornilla beat Diover Mangaya-ay by majority decision (40-36,39-37, 38-38), Marlon Arcilla beat Jerwin dela Rosa by first round TKO (Time 1:53) and Rolly Sumalpong secured a unanimous verdict against Jeffrey Alejandre (39-37 for all three judges).

PINOY PRIDE 23: FILIPINOS KONTRA LATINOS was held Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
