PERLAS PILIPINAS WOMEN?S BASKETBALL TEAM WHIP THAILAND FOR 3-0 SLATE

PhilBoxing.com

The Perlas Pilipinas women?s basketball team whipped hosts Thailand 65-59 for a 3-0 slate in the 25th FIBA Asia Championships for Women in Bangkok.

The Philippines who routed Hong Kong by 30 points in their opening game 87-57 and eased past Uzbekistan in their second appearance 62-55 are chasing a top two finish in Level II that would qualify the squad for Level I playoffs with the two bottom teams which are likely to be Kazakhstan and India based on current results where both teams are 0-3.

But the Perlas Pilipinas girls need to overcome two more SEABA opponents in Malaysia who routed Hong Kong 73-38 and Indonesia who beat Uzbekistan 71-60 to get a chance to compete at the highest level against such powerhouse teams as South Korea, China, Japan and Chinese-Taipei.

FIBA Asia reported that Thailand had already beaten Malaysia and Malaysia in turn have beaten Indonesia ?giving Philippines the psychological advantage after the win over Thailand.?

However, coach Hydee Ong cautioned her players against any complacency. She noted that Malaysia and Indonesia are very good teams. She said "they lost a game which makes them all the more dangerous. They will come out at us with everything they have as they have everything to gain from the games against us. We have to watch out.?

The coach reminded her players that ?the most important thing for us would be to stick to our guns and hold our guard. That, I think, should hold us in good stead.?

Perlas Pilipinas center Analyn Almazan opened the scoring for the Philippines who never trailed during the entire game leading by ten points at the half, 34-24 after taking the first quarter 17-11.

According to the running account provided by PH Sports Live Score the Thais, despite converting 6 of their 8 field goals from beyond the arc in the first half and a threatening 16-2 run behind four big triples that brought them to within 6 at 64-58 with 16 seconds remaining, couldn?t stop the Philippines from notching their third straight victory prompting the FIBA Asia website to regard the Philippine team as ?a revelation.?
Perlas Pilipinas raced to a 19 point lead 61-42 with 4:53 remaining in the game and eventually coasted along behind leading scorer Analyn Almazan who finished with 17 points in addition to 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Chovi Borja and Merenciana Arayi each scored 10 points while team captain Joan Grajales added nine for Perlas Pilipinas.
