PHILIPPINE WOMENS BASKETBALL TEAM BEATS UZBEKISTAN IN FIBA ASIA CHAMPIONSHIPS

PhilBoxing.com

Encouraged by the epic performance of the Gilas Pilipinas men?s team which qualified for the World Cup in Spain next year, the Philippine women?s squad banked on a late rally to beat tough Uzbekistan 62-55 in the FIBA Asia Women?s Championships in Bangkok, Monday.

PH Sports Live kept a running account of the developments as the Discovery Perlas Pilipinas got off to a hot start and led 25-14 with 8:35 left in the second quarter and 41-31 with 7:37 remaining in the third stanza.

But a 17-6 run by the Uzbek ladies cut the Philippines lead to one at the end of the third quarter 43-42 before the score was tied at 51-all with 4:25 left in the game but a 5-0 run eased the Filipinas in front 56-51 with 2:07 left in the game before another 5-2 run made it 61-53 with 49 seconds remaining before the Discovery Perlas Pilipinas cagebelles sealed their second win in a row aith a seven point win, 62-55.

Skipper Joan Grajales who plans to retire at the end of the tournament led the team with 13 points, including three three-pointers, and three assists.

The Perlas Pilipinas squad looked like it was en route to another rout to duplicate their smashing win over Hong Kong 87-57 as Grajales engineered a sizzling start to post a 37-25 lead at the half. The Philippines was led by Analyn Almazan with 22 points while Ewon Arayi added 14,

However, Uzbekistan came charging back in the third quarter to tie the count at 51-51 as the Philippines was held to a mere six points in the third and failed to score in the last 6:20 of the quarter.

That sparked a 10-0 run that gave Perlas Pilipinas a comfortable 61-51 spread entering the dying minutes of the game. Melissa Jacob who had earlier buried a buzzer-beating triple before the end of the first half broke the deadlock with another big three-point shot after which center Analyn Almazan scored on the very next possession.

Forward Chovi Borja then effectively sealed the win with another three-pointer and Merenciana Arayi capped the run with a basket and Grajales split her charities to seal the win.
