MABAIT WINS WBO INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE WITH SPECTACULAR 1ST ROUND KO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 12 Oct 2013 ![]() WBO No. 10 ranked Filipino southpaw Marvin Mabait has won the WBO Intercontinental bantamweight title with a spectacular 1st round knockout over former world title challenger Johnny Garcia of Mexico at the Jose Cuervo Salon in Polanco, Mexico. The time was 53 seconds of the opening round and the impressive win set Mabait up for a possible title shot against Japan?s Tomoki Kameda. In a pre-fight interview Mabait had promised to knockout Garcia. All Star Boxing reported that when Mabait was asked whether feels he needs a knockout to beat the former world title challenger, he replied ?I?m going to knock him out.? Mabait said he had watched some fights of Garcia on YouTube and said ?he seems tough, but I?ll beat him.? Accompanied by trainer Nonito ?Dodong? Donaire Sr, Mabait said he was not worried about fighting in the home country of Garcia because, he said ?I?m very confident that I will beat him convincingly.? Donaire who has reconciled with his son, 2012 ?Fighter of the Year? Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire and will return to Las Vegas to continue training him for his November grudge rematch with Vic Darchinyan said Garcia?s style ?is a good matchup for Marvin. I?m not saying it?ll be easy, but stylistically it?s a good matchup for Marvin.? The twelve round title fight was promoted by ?Tuto Zabala?s Jr. All Star Boxing, Inc. The 25 year old Mabait dropped Garcia with a left to the head and a vicious right hand that apparently broke Garcia?s nose and sent him crashing to the canvas in obvious pain. He didn?t even bother to try and beat the count before his cornermen and the ring doctor rushed into the ring. The 25 year old southpaw Mabait is coming off impressive back-to-back TKO victories after suffering his first setback, a 3rd round TKO against hard-hitting Marco Demecillo in a Philippine title fight on April 22, 2012. Mabait scored a 4th round TKO over Jeson Berwela last January 17 and followed with a 2nd round TKO over Rey Las Pinas on April 13. After the 24 year old Garcia lost by an 11th round knockout to Omar Andres Narvaez in a WBO world super flyweight title fight on October 20, 2012 he came back to win the WBC Latino super flyweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Roberto Pucheta on July 27 this year before scoring an impressive 11th round TKO over the fancied Oscar Ibarra last March 8 in his first defense of his WBC Latino title.
