NBA -- NY Knicks kick off Media Day with eyes on the prize By Julius Romero PhilBoxing.com Tue, 01 Oct 2013 GREENBURGH, NEW YORK --- The New York Knickerbockers showcased their ?new? team to members of the media Monday afternoon here at the team's training facility. The Media Day event started with the introduction of new general manager and president, Steve Mills, who replaced Glen Grunwald. Handpicked by Knicks owner James Dolan, Mills will look into "every aspect of the business" and one of his first major acts as GM was exercising the one-year contract option of head coach Mike Woodson. Mills also made it clear that he intends to keep star player, Carmelo Anthony, ?a Knick for a long time to come?. Mills and Woodson asserted that the goal this season is to win a championship. Woodson, who joins Hall of Famers Red Holzman, Rick Pitino and Pat Riley as the only coaches who have led the Knicks to an Atlantic Division title in franchise history, seeks to defend the division title and take the team to the NBA Finals. Despite some egging from the media, reigning scoring champion Carmelo Anthony (28.7 points per game average) was circumvent about any notions concerning his free agency at the end of the coming season, stating that he is "focusing his energy on the team and this season." Notwithstanding the overall serious tone of Knicks business today, including some talk about several key player?s injuries -- Amar?e Stoudemire( knee), Tim Hardaway Jr.(wrist), JR Smith( knee), veteran player and Queens, New York native Metta World Peace hammed it up with reporters, expressing full confidence in his new team?s overall chemistry. He noted the addition of Andrea Bargnani as an electrifying defensive and offensive addition to the front court along with Tyson Chandler and himself. Coach Woodson stated that the Italian star player and former Toronto Raptor is a "terror to anyone playing in the 4 and 5 positions." The 20-man training camp roster was presented; with first official practice on October 1, 2013. Woodson will have the next several weeks to shake up and finalize his roster of veteran talents and hungry newbies --- and hopefully find the right formula to end the Knicks? season as world champions.
