The Defeats of Manny Pacquiao Would Serve Him Best

PhilBoxing.com

On June 9, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada, Timothy "Perfect Storm" Bradley won a highly controversial split decision over Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao during their WBO Welterweight title fight.

Most of the people who watched the contest between Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley, were not satisfied with the final decision from the three judges as it was undeniable that most of the rounds were dominated by Pacquiao. But then, the victory was still handed to Bradley even though Pacquiao clearly won the bout. Because of that, most everyone in the arena had shown their frustration and angry, following the announcement of the winner. They were worried about the boxing's credibility for it might affect upcoming boxing events. Although Pacquiao accepted the verdict respectfully, he should have challenged the call of the judges because it was the right thing for him to do. He should have protested after the fight, but he didn't.

We have seen Manny Pacquiao showed his sportsmanship to the public, yet it seemed to me he was also to blame for not complaining after what happened. He didn't even talk about it afterwards. I believe there should have an appropriate intervention and disciplinary actions for those judges who made a wrong judgment so that it would never happen again in boxing. Pacquiao and Bradley had both risked their life in the ring. So, I think it would be just to take this matter seriously and to have an unbiased standpoint.

After the Bradley fight, on Dec. 8, 2012, Pacquiao tasted another defeat. This time, it was a devastating loss to Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez via a 6th-round knockout in their fourth encounter and it was named fight of the year and knockout of the year by Ring Magazine. During their action, Pacquiao was winning all those rounds when he became overly confident to finish Marquez in the sixth round. In fact, Marquez had already suffered a broken nose and blood was visible all over his face. Yet, Marquez had a life-saving punch that sent Pacquiao into sleep for a full-minute. In the interview, Pacquiao admitted that he made a huge error for being too aggressive to end the bout early. For that, he paid the ultimate price.

Now, it gives us a good moral lesson, that in boxing, it is not all about winning. Sometimes, you need to fall in order to rise again. To this day, many boxing fans believe that Manny Pacquiao could still recover and reclaim his throne in boxing as a number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world despite his shortcomings. And for me, that's the way he learns life's most important lessons. Certainly, those defeats would serve him best in his future bouts so that he would not make the same mistake again.
