A ?GOLDEN KID? DE LA HOYA RISES
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 17 Sep 2013

While his famed uncle Oscar De La Hoya, ?The Golden Boy? of boxing was undergoing voluntary rehabilitation for alcoholism and drug abuse, super bantamweight Diego ?Golden Kid? De La Hoya was making an impressive debut in the ring against a comparative veteran.
The fight took place on the eve of the Floyd Mayweather Jr ? Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez title fight and was held at the MGM Grand Premier Ballroom.
When it first announced that De La Hoya who had some 250 amateur fights was turning pro, the WBC showed its excitement by stating ?Another golden moment in a golden era.? The WBC report claimed that Diego ?is very similar to Oscar De La Hoya which is why he is nicknamed ?Golden Kid.?
The WBC said Golden Boy Promotions which is owned by Oscar De La Hoya had reached an agreement to promote Diego over the next five years.
In a report on the fight the WBC said that Diego De La Hoya from Mexicali, Mexico ?lit up the boxing ring with blazing combinations that resembled his uncle Oscar De La Hoya and handily won by knockout.?
Referee Robert Byrd actually stopped the fight at 1:53 of the third round according to boxrec.com which listed the result as a TKO.
The ?Golden Kid? battled Puerto Rico?s Luis Cosme who dropped to 8-4 with 3 knockouts was in deep trouble after three rounds of what the WBC described as ?sizzling combinations.?
De La Hoya unleashed a twelve-punch barrage that stopped Cosme at 1:53 of the third round.
The WBC noted that ?If Diego possesses a similar chin, heart and fists to uncle Oscar, he could go far indeed.?
