Rolly Lunas wins North American debut

PhilBoxing.com

Rated Filipino bantamweight contender Rolly Lunas emerged victorious Wednesday night when he defeated Mexican German Meraz in an 8 round bout in Tijuana, Mexico.

Lunas, 29, won by the way of a Unanimous Decision over Meraz, 27, garnering scores of 76-72 and two 78-74 grades from the three judges at ringside.

This was Lunas? first fight after an eleven month layoff and his first in North America. The Tabaco City, Albay fighter relocated to San Diego, California this year after a lengthy stay in Japan.

Lunas was the aggressor for most of the bout, combining head and body work against his opponent who elected not to trade blows with the Filipino boxer.

?Medyo nanibago din ako last night dahil siguro sa tagal ko di nakalaban at mahirap ang style ni Meraz, yakap ng yakap,? was Lunas? assessment of his fight.

(It felt strange last night, maybe because I have not fought for a long time and Meraz? style is a difficult one, he clinches a lot.)

The Bicolano boxer admitted that he was not satisfied with Wednesday?s performance and felt he was slower than usual. He owed that to his long layoff. He also stated that he was also overly-excited to knock Meraz down but was unable to do so because of his style.

?Hindi rin po ako impressed sa laban ko last night, masyadong gigil ako. Gusto ko kasi patumbahin.?

(I was not impressed with my fight last night, I was so eager. I wanted to knock him down.)

Lunas is planning to return to the gym this Monday and plans to jog tomorrow to maintain his weight between 118 to 122 pounds, the bantamweight to super bantamweight division where he plans to continue his campaign. His manager and trainer, Vince Parra plans to have him fight again as soon as possible, possibly in October according to Lunas.

"Very awkward guy with Meraz, Rolly had him stunned a couple times but Meraz knows how to survive. Rolly shook off the rust, good rounds. We are looking to keep him busy. He's ready for anyone at 118 or 22," said Parra.
