Hurricane Julaton expected to make landfall in Cancun this week

PhilBoxing.com

The first ever Filipina-American champion in boxing is once again ready to make her presence known in the sport when she makes her return after a year of absence in the ring.

Next Saturday, Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton, 33, will fight a young and eager Celina Salazar, 24, in the beautiful city of Cancun, Mexico. The 10 round non-title bout will be the co-feature of the championship match between WBC Super Featherweight Titleholder Takashi Miura and Sergio Thompson.

Julaton has been raring to step back in the ring since her August 3 bout last year against Abigail Ramos, also in Mexico. She won impressively, demolishing Ramos in less than 20 seconds of that fight. Despite the long break, Julaton stated that she has not stopped working out since her last fight and described her preparations for this camp as ?tough.?

?In terms of preparing for this fight, I've kept working out since my last fight, so if you're asking how long I've prepared for this fight, I'd say for many, many weeks. I've sparred enough rounds, at least 100, and my sparring sessions are like fights,? Julaton told Philboxing.

Julaton has been sparring with multiple sparring partners at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) Gym in Las Vegas, where she works with the UNLV Boxing team which is run by Chris Ben-Tchavtchavadze, the Strength and Conditioning Trainer of Mayweather Promotions.

?My sparring partners have lots of experience and are also getting ready for fights themselves. It's very competitive. They push me hard and it gets intense in the ring,? narrated Julaton.

The charming boxer who traces her roots in the northern province of Pangasinan in the Philippines will depart for Cancun this Thursday. She will be accompanied by her long-time trainer, Angelo Reyes, cut-man Marco Rivera and promoter/advisor Allan Tremblay. This will be her fourth fight in the region which she praised for having wonderful people, food and culture.

Julaton will be facing Salazar, who according to her was ?the only one who accepted the fight? which was a project of Golden Boy Promotions? Eric Gomez and Robert Diaz, who are looking to promote woman?s boxing as a major attraction or co-feature of big boxing events.

?In terms of who have I asked to fight, well, I'll fight anybody. I didn't ask to fight so and so. I just asked if I could have the opportunity to fight. My opponent was the only one who accepted the fight so she chose to fight me. It doesn't matter who's facing me in the ring,? said Julaton.

Julaton also dismissed reports of her fighting in the Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Saul Alvarez card on September 14 in Las Vegas. She stated that nothing about it has been finalized yet and maintained that she is not thinking about it and is instead focusing a hundred percent on her fight on August 17th.

?As far as I'm concerned, it's still just a rumor, nothing is set in stone. Right now, I have this opportunity to fight in front of multiple TV networks that will be televised worldwide and the only thing in my mind is winning.?

The Cancun card will be carried live by Televisa which will air on Canal 5 in Mexico beginning at 10:30 p.m. CT in Mexico and in the United States by Fox Deportes which will go live at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m.

Julaton also mentioned that WOWOW of Japan and GMA Network in the Philippines are some of the networks that will possibly carry the bouts in their respective countries.

Julaton also sent an invitation to her ?kababayans? in the Philippines and worldwide to watch her perform next Saturday as she makes another run to be the sports? top female boxer.

?My blood, sweat, and tears are dedicated to my family, the Philippines, and to all my kababayan all over the world because we all know we are everywhere. Maraming, maraming, maraming salamat po. I am proud to be Filipina.?
