Cuba hoping to tame the WSB
PhilBoxing.com Wed, 03 Jul 2013
Lausanne, Switzerland, 02 July 2013 - A few hours away from the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Season IV Official Draw, the new Cuban Franchise has announced its team name and unveiled its logo today.
The team, which is expected to contain the leading stars of the Cuban Olympic Boxing squad, will be called the "Domadores" or "Tamers" in English. Often associated with lion-tamers, the phrase suggests that the Domadores Cuba Boxing Team will be hoping to control some of the WSB's more ferocious Franchises in a similar way.
The logo pays homage to Cuban boxer Te?filo Stevenson, the country's three time Olympic Gold medallist and World Champion, who died last year aged 60. He is widely regarded as being the most successful boxer that Cuba has ever produced and it is his image that the team will be fighting under.
According to Alberto Puig de la Barca, President of the Cuban Boxing Federation, "the logo design was inspired by the traditional strength and prestige of Cuban boxing. It encapsulates the obligation of every member of the team to fight for the win in each and every bout, with the purpose of confirming that our country belongs among the world's elite in this sport". He went on to explain that "it is the graphic expression of our will to overcome our adversaries, to respect fair-play and to represent our flag".
Who Cuba will face in their first WSB season has been the subject of intense speculation on the WSB facebook page. A number of fans have indicated that their dream match would be to watch Cuba facing Season III winners Astana Arlans Kazakhstan. With the 2013-2014 Official Draw only a few hours away, we will shortly find out.
You can watch the draw from 19:00 CET on the WSB YouTube channel or on a number of boxing websites (click here for full details). You can also follow the event on Twitter by following @WSB_Boxing or the event hashtag #WSBDraw.
