ZOU SHIMING / FREDDIE ROACH LA Media Workout - July 11

PhilBoxing.com

HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. ? (July 2, 2013) -- Two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Amateur Champion ZOU SHIMING and his Hall of Fame trainer FREDDIE ROACH will host a Media Workout Thursday, July 11, at the Wild Card Boxing Club (1123 North Vine St. - one block north of Santa Monica Blvd. -- Hollywood, Calif. 90038), beginning at 1:00 p.m. PT. Shiming (1-0) is in his final weeks of training for his six-round debut. Joining them and making themselves available for interviews will be Hall of Fame promoter BOB ARUM and Hall of Fame broadcasting journalist LARRY MERCHANT.

World championship boxing returns to Macau with "Fists of Gold II," featuring two world title fights and headlined by the return of the Peoples Republic of China's Olympic icon Zou Shiming. This brilliant event will be televised to the U.S. on Saturday, July 27, beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET/PT, on HBO2?. Once again calling the action from ringside, from the CotaiArena?, The Venetian? Macao-Resort-Hotel, will be broadcasting icons Tim Ryan and Larry Merchant and two-time heavyweight champion Big George Foreman.

Campaigning as a flyweight, Zou will be graduating to a six-round bout when he faces Jesus Ortega (3-1, 2 KOs) from Hermosillo, M?xico. A stablemate of world flyweight champion Juan Estrada, the hard-hitting Ortega is an exciting prospect who enters this fight on a roll, having won his last two fights ? his most recent a third-round knockout victory against Arcadio Sanchez April 19.

In addition to Zou's return, the telecast will include two 12-round world championship fights. WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Estrada (23-2, 17 KOs), of Hermosillo, M?xico, will make the first defense of the titles he won from Brian Viloria April 6 at Fists of Gold. Estrada faces the undefeated Milan Melindo (28-0, 11 KOs), of Manadue, Philippines. Melindo, the number one contender and mandatory challenger, earned his shot at the title by knocking out once-beaten Tommy Seran in the fourth round on the April 6 card in Macao. Undefeated IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich (16-0, 8 KOs), a native of Russia, now fighting from Oxnard, Calif., makes his first title defense against No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger Mauricio Mu?oz (26-3, 12 KOs), of San Juan, Argentina. Gradovich captured the world title March 1 when he dethroned defending champion Billy Dib via a split decision. Mu?oz earned his title shot by defeating previously unbeaten contender Luis Franco in his last fight, October 13, 2012. The international telecast will open with a 10-round heavyweight rumble between undefeated contenders Andy Ruiz, Jr. (19-0, 13 KOs), of Mexicali, M?xico, and Joe Hanks (21-0, 14 KOs), of Los Angeles.

One of the most popular Olympic athletes in the People's Republic of China, Shiming was the world's greatest amateur light flyweight, capturing gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. In the 2005, 2007, and 2011 World Amateur Championships, Shiming also brought home gold medals, making him his nation?s first boxing gold medalist in the World Amateur Championships and Olympics. He became his nation?s first Olympic medalist in boxing when he earned bronze in 2004.

Known for his extraordinary speed and superb footwork, thanks to years of martial-arts training, many of Shiming's opponents complain that they cannot keep up with him, much less see his punches coming. He has stated that his heroes are Muhammad Ali and Jackie Chan.
