PAYANO SURVIVES KD AND KO MARAON By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sat, 15 Jun 2013 ![]() Payano. It was a battle of undefeated world bantamweight contenders. Both boxers sporting unblemished records prior to the fight for the WBO bantamweight title eliminator. The bout was held at the Richard D. Codey Arena in West Orange, New Jersey. It was scheduled for twelve rounds. Juan Carlos Payano of the Dominican Republic dealt Jundy Maraon his first loss. The two-time Olympian survived a third round knockdown inflected on him by the Sominot, Zamboanga del Sur boxer. He showed guts and determination throughout the fight that earned him the monicker "Little Pacquiao." They clashed heads in the first round causing a cut above the right eye off Payano. At the end of the third round a punch by Maraon caught Payano and he went down. But he was able to get up and swiftly recovered from the knockdown. In the seventh round, Payano landed a powerful left hand to the head that sent Maraon down and never to get up for a full count by referee Randy Neumann. The official time of the knockout was 0:39 of the seventh round. Payano won his 14th professional bout in as many contests he fought preserving his unblemished record and scoring his 8th knockout win. "Pretty Boy" Maraon suffered his first setback in 17 career fights. He was medically examined at the hospital where he was rushed after the fight. Clearly, Maraon lacked the aggressiveness that marks the quality of future world champions. And he faced a battle-tested two-time Pan American Games silver medalist in Payano. All is not lost for Maraon though. Fighting twice only after a very long inactivity caused a lot of rust on his arsenal. He surely would learn a lot with the loss and come back a more prepared and aggressive fighter. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L. Samaco. ![]() |
