NBA -- Knicks honor '73 championship team By Raman Sharma PhilBoxing.com Sat, 06 Apr 2013 ![]() NEW YORK -- All members of the 1973 New York Knicks were in the Madison Square Garden Friday and honored on the 40th anniversary of their title run. The legendary Red Holzman coached them to their second championship in four years (1970 and 1973). The number 613 hangs from the rafters at The Garden in honor of Holzman's 613 career victories. In 1973 the Knicks defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in five games for the championship. Former Knick and former US Senator Bill Bradley told reporters "Once a Knicks fan, always a Knicks fan and for 40 years we've been suffering Knicks fans." All die hard Knicks fans nodded and can relate to that sentiment. Phil Jackson spoke glowingly about this current Knicks team and told the fans that "we bonded in a way in which I've tried to coach the players that I've coached over the years." Jackson received a loud standing ovation from the Garden crowd, recognizing him for his amazing achievements of 11 NBA championships in Chicago and Los Angeles. Ironically, it was the Jackson-coached Chicago Bulls teams that repeatedly blocked the title aspirations of the Knicks in the 1990's. The Zen Master used to be booed at the Garden back in those days.. Willis "The Captain" Reed is well known to Knicks fans for limping out from the locker room to play in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals, which the Knicks captured.. Earl "The Pearl" Monroe took to the podium to inspire the Knicks to play their best basketball and bring another championship to the City of New York this year. Carmelo Anthony wore #15 his entire career, but chose #7 in New York, since Monroe's #15 hangs from the rafters. Fittingly, it was Anthony who responded on fire in the second half to lead the Knicks to victory with 41 points. The all time greatest Knicks were in attendance and that was enough to bring out the best in Carmelo Anthony. Willis Reed, Walt Clyde Frazier, Jerry Lucas, Bill Bradley, Earl Monroe, and Dave DeBuscherre were all inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame. Phil Jackson was later added to the Hall of Fame as a coach.
