Haridas Pascua keeps top spot in PSC Chess

FRESH from beating 6th seed GM Mark Paragua (ELO 2519), 14th seed Fide Master Haridas Pascua (ELO 2386) settled for a draw with 4th seed GM elect Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa of Mongolia (ELO 2522) in Friday's seventh round to remain on top along with Paragua in the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Cup International Chess Championships at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.
The Pangasinan Chess Federation mainstay Pascua had 6.0 points on 5 win and two draws, the same output of Paragua, whom he beat in Thursday's sixth round. The Tondo, Manila born Paragua, on the other hand bounced back in contention after beating second seed GM Oliver Barbosa (ELO 2574) in the US$30,000 SMART-sponsored nine Round-Swiss tournament, hosted by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) headed by it's Chairman Ricardo Garcia and organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's Chairman / President Prospero A. Pichay Jr. , Secretary-General and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham 'Bambol' Tolentino Jr. and Executive Director Jayson Gonzales.
11th seed GM Richard Bitoon (ELO 2411), meantime defeated 9th seed IM Rolando Nolte (ELO 2460) to scored 5.5 points and shared Gundavaa for 3rd to 4th placers in this FIDE event, which offers a top prize of US $6,000, supported by Puregold, Manila Pavilion Hotel, City State Tower Hotel and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Peping Cojuangco.
12-time national open champion 3rd seed GM Rogelio 'Joey' Antonio Jr. subdued 15th seed FM Gombosuren Munkhgal (ELO 2372) to scored 5.0 points and create a six-way tie for 5th place. Also with 5.0 points are top seed Super GM Aleksandr Rakhmanov of Russia, (ELO 2612), 5th seed GM John Paul Gomez (ELO 2520), 7th seed GM Darwin Laylo (ELO 2491), 20th seed FM Hamed Nouri (ELO 2350) and Munkhgal.-Marlon Bernardino-
