Thrilla in Minglanilla Ringside Report

PhilBoxing.com

Donnie “Ahas” Nietes gave Roberto Rubillar a world class beating for ten one-sided rounds in the Minglanilla Sports Complex in Cebu.

Nietes, who hails from Bacolod, entered the ring with a large snake hanging from his neck. This inclusion of wildlife in the pre-fight entourage may have been a first in Philippine boxing. He lived up to the hype as he proceeded to dish out punishment on his opponent from Angeles City.

Rubillar was on defensive mode throughout the fight. Nietes landed vicious head and body blows at will. There was really no semblance of offense from Rubillar as his counters were ineffective in holding off the Nietes’ onslaught. It was a surprise that Rubillar finished the fight on his feet. Nietes won every round in the judges’ scorecards.

Rubillar (3W-12L-1D) was last seen in Cebu in a losing effort to Robert Allanic. This was Nietes' first ring appearance since he won by decision over Noel Veronque last January 15. Nietes improves to 14 wins (9 ko's) with 1 loss and 2 draws. He will now prepare for an anticipated showdown with IBF 105 lb. world titlist Muhammad Rachman of Indonesia.

In the supporting bouts ALA boy Rollen del Castillo scored a third round TKO win over Nelson Guidolan of Davao. Del Castillo had a one-point deduction for an accidental headbutt in the opening round. Guidolan started like a man possessed in the second round and cornered del Castillo. The fight turned into an entertaining brawl as defense became a mere afterthought. Del Castillo sarted to connect more in the third round and blood was streaming down Guidolan’s face from a cut on his right eyebrow. He was brought to the neutral corner to be examined by the ringside physician but he then signaled that he was unable to continue.

Flyweight Louie Bantigue scored a workmanlike 10 round unanimous decision win over Bert Gawat. The judges’ scorecards read 96-94, 97-93 and 96-94.

In a fan-friendly superbantamweight encounter, SGG’s Reman Salim survived a flash knockdown in round one and knocked down his opponent, Marlou Ednay, twice in the second round. A give and take brawl ensued and Salim finally finished the job with a stoppage win at 2:15 seconds of round five.

Mini-flyweight Edmund Velayo had a six round decision win over Arnold Senego. Scores: 59-55 AND 59-56 twice. Rasheed Bacus scored a unanimous decision win over Vernil Desabille in a six round lt.flyweight encounter. Scores: 59-55, 58-56, 60-54.

Lt.Flyweight Jumboy Ambray won over Rogen Flores via unanimous decision in six rounds. Scores: 58-56 all judges. Wilson “Weng” Haya beat Romeo Jakosalem unanimous decision in round rounds. Scores: 40-36, 40-37, and 39-37.

Birx “Bomb” Ray had a unanimous decision win over Marjo Borres in four rounds. Rey scored a knockdown the final round. The festivities were started by a four round split draw encounter between Jessie Albaracin and Gil Melliguen. Scorecards read 38-38 and two other judges had different picks scoring 39-37.

The event was presented by SGG Sports Promotions of international promoter Sammy Gello-ani in partnership with the MIBA-Association of Barangay Captains and the municipal government of Minglanilla under the leadership of Mayor Eduardo Selma.
