MAYOR ISMAEL TUMARU: "I WANT TO BRING BACK BOXING TO APARRI" By Chito Yu Katangkatang PhilBoxing.com Fri, 11 May 2012 Aparri, Cagayan - During the presscon and motorcade of the "Dinnanogan Ditoy Aparri-Cabalquinto vs. Ignacio", Honorable Mayor Ismael Tumaru, MD shared some thoughts with Philboxing.com about his boxing dreams for his hometown of Aparri, Cagayan. "During the 1950's boxing was very much active in Aparri. In fact there was even a good number of women boxers who did well in the amateurs. The youth were very active in every boxing activity. Boxing was a way of life and it diverted the focus of young people to sports instead of resorting to vices such as drugs and the likes. Now that Manny Pacquiao has brought Philippine boxing to its Golden Age, it is also the perfect timing for me to bring back boxing to my beloved town of Aparri. With the help of Mr. Joven Jimenez, I intend to conduct boxing trainings from the grassroots level and organize more Amateur Boxing Tournaments in order to discover new talents from the locals. We will try to compete in the national amateur boxing tournaments. Who knows, the next boxing superstar might come from this corner of the country." Indeed, the people of Aparri seemed to have missed live boxing fights in town. During the press-con and motorcade, hundreds of people trooped to the public plaza just to see the fighter who will competing later tonight. Children and young people line up to fight in the Amateur Mini-Tournament to be done before the main cards of the Dinnanogan Ditoy Aparri. Mayor Tumaru, who is both an Army General and Licensed Physician admits that he is a boxing fanatic himself and never misses watching good fights especially when it involves Filipino Fighters. He told this scribe that tickets are sold out for tonight's event and a jampacked gym is expected.Indeed it is a sight to behold that Boxing is very much alive in the Northern Tip of the Philippines.
