PhilBoxing.com

DAVAO City -- Comebacking Elpher Paganpan of Davao City survived a first round knockdown to score a 6th round technical knockout against former amateur standout Rolando Omila of Tagum City in the 75th Araw ng Dabaw Boxing Showdown held Saturday at the Rizal Park.

The 30-year old Paganpan from the Yollly Alfante Stable was surprisingly decked by Omila during a trading of punches in the opening round. But the hard-fighting Paganpan came back strong in the second round by connecting body and head shots on Omila.
Paganpan, however, suffered a cut on his left eyebrow due to an accidental head butt in the third round while landing solid body and head blows on Omila.

Paganpan again had a head butt and cut his right eyebrow but still continued to hurt Omila with body shots in the fourth canto. In the next round, Paganpan started hot but accidentally landed an illegal blow below the belt that sent Omila downed on his knees at the corner.

Paganpan hit a left straight to further damage Omila?s face after connecting several body shots at the end of the fifth round.

The end of the scheduled 8-rounder title-fight for the vacant junior featherweight title of the Mindanao Professional Boxing Association (Minproba) came in the 2:34 of the sixth round when Paganpan connected a left jab on the face followed by an upper on the midsection then with left-right combinations on the body that saw Omila down for good. It was Paganpan?s 12th win against 10 loses and two draws

Omila was later rushed to the hospital after complaining of severe headaches. He was brought by the Central 911 Davao upon the advised of Dr. Tan for observation.
Korean Jung Wan Hwa donated and awarded a golden belt to Paganpan.

The other championship fight saw Jog Alim of VJA Stable stopped Ruben Santilanosa in 2:59 of the third round to bag the Minproba featherweight title.

Alim landed a right jab to first knockdown Santilanosa but he also again downed his foe with an accidental blow below the belt. Santilanosa recovered but was again decked by Alim with a right jab on the face and was not able to recover already. Alim improved his fight record to 11 wins with five losses and one draw.

Alfante?s female fighters Cheralie Dagit and Anabelle Herbolario shared the limelight after they both kayoed their rivals in the undercard. Dagit scored a first round stoppage in 33 minutes of the first round against Joylyn Marfil of Billy Quinones Stable from General Santos City, while skinhead Herbolario scored a third round technical knockout win in 2:38 against Rahma Maginda also of Gensan in their 4-round bouts.

The other results: Allan Doronilla beat Renante Suacasa by majority decision (6 rds.-112 lbs.), Jessie James Boiles TKO?d Johnny Belo in 2:43 of 4th round (4 rds.-106 lbs.) and Joei Canete outclassed Dindong Quinoes via unanimous decision.
Meanwhile, promoter Yolly Alfante awarded the certificates of recognition to veteran boxing trainer Ben Delgado (who is now based in US), ring physician Dr. Edgar Tan and retired referee-judges Satur Yongco and Romeo Alfante for their contributions to
professional boxing in the country.

Delgado was the trainer of 8th round world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao when he won the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight crown. Delgado also trained former WBC light flyweight champion Rolando Pascua and WBO Inter-continental junior bantamweight king Bernie Torres.

The free boxing to the public was sponsored by Vice Mayor Rody Duterte, Rep. Manny Pacquiao, Dabaw Tourism Operators Association (Dabtoa) and the Yolly Alfante Training Center.
