European heavyweights Paris and Milan to do battle this Monday PhilBoxing.com Mon, 05 Mar 2012 Lausanne, Switzerland, 4 March 2012 - A rivalry that has spanned centuries will once again be revived this Monday at the Stade Pierre-de-Coubertin in the heart of the French capital as Paris United host the Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder in the World Series of Boxing quarter-finals. This titanic clash between the reigning champions from France and the glamour team from Italy promises to be sensational. In this first leg, the struggling Paris United, who finished third in Group B, will look to use home advantage and claim a precious victory. It has been a strange campaign so far for the French outfit who had no consistency during the regular season, suffering probably from the second season syndrome and under the weight of the tag of reigning champions. They had to ensure they won their last two fixtures to guarantee their passage to the knock-out stages. Last season though, Paris United defied the odds to take the coveted WSB trophy in spectacular style. They have stressed all along that it is the results you get during the business end of the season that define your assault on the title. So all to play for when the mighty Milan come to town this Monday. They have put lined-up a strong five to take to the ring with Frenchman Geoffrey Dos Santos opening the show in the Bantamweight contest. The 22-year-old has fought twice in his debut season for two quite close defeats. However it seems that he is capable of the unexpected. Irishman John Joe Nevin continues to re-write the record books in his homeland and his WSB record speaks for itself. Always reliable, the intelligent 22-year-old will be looking to set down a marker for his team in the Lightweight category. Exciting Cameroons Joseph Mulema will be giving his all to ensure he comes out on top in the Middleweight fight. Croatian duo Hrvoje Sep and Filip Hrgovic will be doing their thing in the Light Heavy and Heavyweight categories respectively. The former is a powerful experienced 26-year-old who just loves to get in his opponents faces and the latter is a man mountain who packs a real punch with his 198cm frame with eleven career WSB matches. The Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder had looked invincible throughout the season but seemed to lose their momentum in the final stages. The first seven fixtures had produced as many victories and the Italian outfit was flying. They looked on course for Group A supremacy but were stunned by the Astana Arlans in Kazakhstan and then again by Dynamo Moscow on the ultimate day as they were piped to top spot in the table. Milano have ensured an interesting clash in the Bantamweights with savvy Beijing 2008 Olympic Games bronze medallist Veaceslav Gojan selected to travel to Paris. 21-year-old Serbian National Champion Branimir Stankovic who has yet to compete in the WSB will have the unenviable task of facing Nevin in the Lightweight contest. Another Irishman will be showcasing his skills, this time in the Middleweight category; undefeated William McLaughlin will seek to continue the fine form that has brought him three wins already this season. Milano is also adding fire to the rivalry with their French Light Heavyweight Ludovic Groguh? looking to tip the balance in the Italians favour. Pride of Poland Michal Olas will be the big Heavyweight hope and he will be hoping to add to his two impressive victories so far in his debut season. With a huge following back home, he will be eager to impress once more. This is guaranteed to be one of the best matches of the season. Follow the action live on www.worldseriesboxingtv.com. ![]() |
