GM BARBOSA WINS TOP PLACE IN DELHI CHESS OPEN

FILIPINO Grandmaster (GM) Oliver Barbosa won the overall title in the 10th Parsvnath International Grandmasters Chess Tournament at Ludlow Castle Sports Complex, Civil Lines in New Delhi, India on Monday.

The Taytay, Rizal native defeated International Master Shyam Nikil using the disadvantageous black pieces in the eleventh and final round.

This victory enabled the former University of the Philippines (UP) mainstay Barbosa to take his tally to nine and half points (9.5 points) to take the Winner?s trophy and pocketed a cash prize of 2 lakh rupees.

?We (NCFP) extend our congratulations to our Pinoy woodpushers for once again proving that we Filipinos are capable of competing against the best and the brightest on the world stage,? said National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) chair-president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.

GM John Paul Gomez settled a truce with Ma Qun of China using a similar disadvantageous black pieces to finish a tie for second and third places with 9 points together with IM Lalith Babu M R of India. However, after the tie break points were applied, the pride of Binan, Laguna took over-all second place.

GM Mark Paragua routed GM Evgeny Gleizerov of Russia to finish a tie for fourth to fifth places. The Bulacan based Paragua took over-all fourth with a superior quotient against Ma.

"Nations like Russia, China, India, America and Europe have been touted as superpowers in chess. Kaya hindi biro ang 1-2-4 finish nina Oliver, John Paul at Mark sa India chess meet," said Pichay, who is is fully supporting the players' overseas campaign as part of the Philippine Team preparation for this year's 38th World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey in close cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Olympic Committee.

However, GM Richard Bitoon yielded to untitled Kulkarni Chinmay of India employing the black pieces and remained stuck at 6.5 points. The Medellin, Cebu bet finished in a tie for 66th to 94th places.
