NATIONAL BOXING TEAM MEMBER JACK TEPORA TO COMPETE IN AN INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT IN PAKISTAN By Felman Gingoyon PhilBoxing.com Fri, 16 Dec 2011 An invitational tournament in Pakistan on Dec. 23 to 30 will further gauge Cebu amateur standout Jack Tepora's advancement as part of the elite national boxing team. Also slated to compete are fellow national team elements Recky Dulay of Northern Samar and Jogen Ladon of Bago City. The trio are in heavy training at the National Sports Training Center of PSC in Teachers Camp, Baguio City and will be accompanied by national team coach Elmer Pamisa. This will be the second international tournament for the 16-year old Tepora, having brought home a gold medal in another invitational tournament in Hong Kong last October. He was supposed to be in the national team for the AIBA World Junior Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan earlier this year but fate may have it, unable to secure a passport on time, placed him on the sidelines. Team mate Eumir Felix Marcial of Zamboanga went on to win gold in the 52-kg. division, first of such for the country since it's inception in 2001. An attractive career in the pro ranks almost got the better of former Omega boxing club stalwart Tepora. But after an impressive showing in PLDT-ABAP Visayas Area Championships last year and looking untouchable in the National Championships earlier this year in Cagayan de Oro City, he received an invitation from ABAP to join as part of the national training pool and eventually changed his mind. "There are so many talented young amateurs out there, but being able to join the national team and represent the country is something special, opportunity knocks only once and you have to grab it. Professional boxing is always there and you can have it anytime you want but what I realized is giving honor and glory to our country is incomparable" said the soft-spoken Jack, whose brother Chistopher "Ping-Ping" Tepora is a former pro boxer, in an interview. " If given a chance, I would like to represent the country in the Olympics and win our first Olympic gold medal" added Tepora. The team will be leaving the country in Dec. 20 and will be spending the Holidays in a far off land. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Felman Gingoyon. |
