NO UPSET, VILORIA SIMPLY DELIVERED THE GOODS AS HE PROMISED

PhilBoxing.com

?I have trained ten times harder than I trained for the Miranda fight. I ran up mountains to make sure my stamina won?t be an issue. My trainer pushed me beyond my limits just to make sure I keep my belt. I am going to remain as champion for as long as I can.? These were the words of Brian Viloria during the Island Assault 3 Press Conference. Words that showed self confidence and courage. Some media people questioned his consistency as shown by his roller coaster career. Many doubted his chin and stamina especially with an opponent who has never been down, been knocking out people left and right, stopped Ivan Calderon twice and ranked number 9 by Ring Magazine. For others, Viloria was the underdog but Brian himself knew he was not. He was the more experienced, the more skilled and the stronger fighter. He only needed the chance. He promised his Fans a win and a good fight at that. And he delivered the goods.

Indeed Viloria?s career has been a roller coaster ride. He lost when we expected him to win easily. And won when we thought he had difficult opponents. He is a man of surprise. Being a Filipino Boxing fan, I consider Brian as a warrior with his mind and heart as his greatest strength. He is a mental warrior who can win any battle if he wants to win but can lose fights due to distractions and overconfidence. But people learn lessons. Viloria has learned from the past. And now, he has decided that playtime is over and he will keep on winning.

As a boxing observer, I consider Julio Cesar Miranda as Viloria?s toughest opponent. Pingo Miranda was the more complete fighter than Giovanni Segura. Segura relies solely on his power and courage. And he earned his spot on the pound for pound ranking by beating a slower and older version of an Ivan Calderon. Calderon was almost beaten by Rodel Mayol if not for the head butts. Segura finished what Mayol has attempted to do and he did a great job twice. Segura deserves the credit of course. But resume wise, Viloria fought better oppositions.

Came fight night, Segura immediately started as expected. At the ring of the opening bell, he immediately harassed Viloria with wild hooks to the body and head. Some landed on the gloves and limbs but not a single good connection was made. Viloria knew his opponent and took the fight to the center of the ring. Segura wildly missed and showed a bit of exhaustion. Then Viloria showed his surprise arsenals. Brian did not run away from the Aztec Warrior, he brought the game to Segura with a crazy mix of counter punching, brawling and powerful flurry of combinations to Giovanni?s head and body. As a result, Segura?s face got deformed by a huge hematoma caused by repeated accurate left hooks from the Filipino Champion.

Viloria continued the onslaught despite being rocked by several power shots from the strong Mexican. The champion himself bled from a left eye cut but this did not stop his relentless battering of Segura. With eyes almost shut and head swell almost bursting, Segura was rocked by a strong left, wobbled towards the side of the ring thus prompting referee Luis Viruet to protect the Mexican from further punishment. Viloria?s hands were raised with an eight round TKO win and Ynares Sports Center got crazy celebrating the win of the Filipino hero. At ringside were pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao and two division world champion Gerry ?Fearless? Pe?alosa who supported their fellow Pinoy boxer.

Boxing Fans and Afficionados were divided in predicting the outcome of the fight. But Viloria was unfazed and made it look like an easy win. With the big victory, Brian ?The Hawaiian Punch? Viloria joins fellow countrymen Nonito Donaire Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in the top 10 pound for pound list of Ring magazine. The win shall also boost Brian?s ranking in other sanctioning bodies and his economic value as a prize fighter.

When asked about his next fight, Viloria told the media his desire to unify his belt with WBC Champion, Ring Magazine Flyweight Champion and no. 9 rated Pongsaklek Wonjongkam of Thailand. WBA Flyweight Champ Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez is also a possible opponent.
