Filipinos Johann Randall Abrina, Roberto Racasa, Christopher Carandang, Mark Anthony Castaneda, Axelyancy Cowan Tabernilla and Erwin Balines playing under the banner of the PCSO-Mandaluyong-Bagong Henerasyon Philippine Memory Team will be going up against the world?s brightest mental athletes which end on Friday here at the Mount River Resort Hotel. ?This is our strongest team right now and I'm confident our players will perform well," said PCSO-Mandaluyong-Bagong Henerasyon Philippine Memory Team delegation head and coach RP and US chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. Countries taking part include Canada,China, Germany, United Kingdom, USA, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Pakistan. Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Uzbekistan and Vietnam with a total of 121 competitors. The annual competition was instituted to challenge the limits of human memory consisting of 10 events like binary digits (5 minutes/30 minute), numbers (5/30 min), spoken numbers, speed cards, cards (10/30min/1 hour), random words, historic/future dates, names and faces and abstract images. ?My Primary goal for the 2011 WMC is to get my 3rd and final GM (grandmaster) norm to complete my GM title," said Abrina, a registered nurse and University of the Philippines (UP) Sports Psychology graduate from Barangay Wackwack in Mandaluyong who earned his 1st grandmaster (GM) norm by winning the silver medal in the speed cards category in the 2010 UK International Memory Championships. He memorized 12 deck of cards (equivalent to 624 points) in an hour en route to his second grandmaster (GM) norm in the 19th World Memory Championships in China. Abrina needed one more GM norm to achieve the Grandmaster (GM) of Memory status. He needed to memorize 1,000 digit numbers in an hour to be the first Filipino GM memory. Abrina and Racasa, a former Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) top chess player, incidentally combined talents in settling for over-all 7th place in the team play of the 19th edition of the World Memory Championships last year, also in Guangzhou. The nationals participation in the world tourney would not have been possible had it not for the support of the PCSO thru it's GM Atty. Joy Rojas and chairman Margie Juico, Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos, Mandaluyong City representative Neptali "Boyet" Gonzales II, Bagong Henerasyon (BH) Party List representative Bernadette Herrera-Dy, St. Francis Square?s Luke Rojas, Bicycle playing cards and ACCEL's Willy Ortiz. ![]() |
