Philippines Two for Two! Amit & Ranola Pinoy Pride at Yalin World Championship

PhilBoxing.com

Iris Ranola.

Manila, Philippines- Philippines had exactly two bets representing the country going into the World Championship. And that's all it needed. Iris Ranola and Rubilen Amit have become the darlings of the tournament with their short stature but big hearts winning the approval of the local fans. An elite world class pros only field of 48 international superstars of the world's greatest women's players attended the event to become the World Champion of 10-Ball.

While Amit has been the focal point of the national news as a former World Champion, Ranola made some nice waves yesterday as she fought her way out of her group. AT one point she was on the brink of having her run cut short when she lost a 6-5 deciding battle to Russia's Necheava. Both players were shot with nervousness as they both missed several times on the last remaining balls in the deciding last rack. Ranola would lose this match and be forced in a do or die match against Taiwan's tough H.S. Lai. Ranola won the match at 6-4, qualified for the next round, and as a bonus she won the group putting her into the top 8 overall seeds to receive a bye.

"I'm so happy!" she exclaimed as she hugged random people around her."Last year I didn't qualify even with three wins and two losses. I cried for three days. And now I'm first in my group! What a turnaround!" Ranola had big wins in the group including over 2010 World 9-Ball Champion Xiaofang Fu of China.

Her usual tour roomate and close friend Rubilen Amit followed Ranola in winning her group. Amit, a definite contender from the start of the event to win the championship, was placed in the toughest group of the event. Group 1, coined "The group of death", pitted Amit against two other World Champions. Amit defeated Shin Mei Liu and also reigning World 10-Ball Champion Jasmin Ouschan in a 6-2 rout. Amit basically stood out amongst the group of World Champions the first three days.

"It's big pressure to play here at home. Everyone expects me to win. But I've been doing meditations and really I'm trying my best. I even got a hotel room here with the other players to be near the matches, though I live in Manila. It's an investment!" said the soft spoken and kind hearted Amit. Rubilen is one of the most well liked players on tour amongst players and fans alike.

Ranola and Amit both receive byes and will wait for opponents in the top 16 stage of the event today.
Their goal will to be to survive today and make it to tomorrow's final four.

The Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship is additionally sponsored by ABS-CBN Sports, Robinson's Galleria, Predator Cues, Pool & Billiard Magazine, Top147.com, Simonis Cloth, Aramith Balls, Magic 89.9, and Crown Plaza Galleria Ortigas. The event will be airing on ABS-CBN and internationally on ESPN Star Sports. The event will be broadcast live for all five days of the main event with 25 hours of broadcast television coverage.
With these global network and media partners the Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship is still the biggest and most watched women's billiard event in the world.
