PAGULAYAN, CORTEZA CONTINUE WINNING RUN IN US OPEN 9-BALL

FIVE Filipino billiard heavyweights extended their winning streak during Round Three of the 2011 US Open 9-Ball tournament yesterday at the Chesapeake Conference Center in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA.
Former World 9-ball champion Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan, ex-national champion Lee Vann "The Slayer" Corteza toyed with their foes while billiard cue masters Warren "Warrior" Kiamco, Antonio "Nickoy" Lining and Jundel "Jano" Mazon survived dangerous opponents.
Pagulayan beat Grover Foster 11-8, to meet Stan Shuffett in Round Four, Corteza nipped Michael Banks 11-4 to face Robb Saez, Kiamco edged Dennis Hatch 11-10 to test the mettle the survivor of Daryl Peach and Hunter Lombardo tussle, Lining routed Basher Hussain Abdulmajeed 11-1 to slug it out with Ralf Souquet and Mazon prevailed over Li Wen Lo 11-6 to meet neither Kevin Bailey and Kenichi Uchigaki who is still playing as of presstime.
Despite the successful games of the five Filipino cue artists backed up by Energen, Kopiko, Negros Billiards Stable and Puyat Sports, the RP contingent also suffered heavy losses.
Antonio "Ga-Ga" Gabica lost to Jayson Shaw, 11-1, in the third round of winner's brackets while pool legend Jose "Amang" Parica was booted out after yielding to Shane Jackson 11-9 in the loser's side.
Gabica needed to win his match against Tomoo Takano to progress.
