After months of waiting for the issuance of a working visa to allow him to campaign in the United States, Philippine bantamweight champion Glenn Porras finally leaves for the United States on Wednesday, Oct. 5 and will take on his first fight Oct. 15. The 25-year-old Porras, from the town of M'lang, North Cotabato and a product of the grassroots boxing program started by then Governor Manny Pinol, will be co-managed by Pinol and American boxing manager Vincent Scolpino of New Jersey. Scolpino is also the manager of former Manny Pacquiao opponent, Joshua Clottey, and is also the exclusive US business manager of another Filipino prospect, former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific Bantamweight Champion Jundy Maraon who is returning to the ring after two years of inactivity because of a hand injury. Porras is the current bantamweight titleholder in the Philippines, a title he won by decision over Richard Pumicpic in February this year but he will have to relinquish as he starts his 3-year US campaign. Porras will initially be handled by Nonito Donaire, Sr., who also helped train the North Cotabato boxers before he returned to the US last year. He is based in San Leandro, California where he also trains his son, Glenn Donaire, older brother of world bantamweight champion Nonito Jr. Porras will be accompanied in his trip to the US by no less than the former Governor's wife, Emily, who will also be visiting her sister in San Diego, California. "I am happy that after a very long wait, Glenn's documents have finally been released and now he can start his campaign in the US," Pinol said. Aside from Porras and Maraon, another Braveheart boxer, undefeated Lorenzo Villanueva is also applying for travel documents to the US to be able to continue his training under Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach in the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California. Villanueva is currently training with Roach in Baguio City, alongside world welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao who is preparing for his third match up with Mexican ring legend Juan Manuel Marquez. ![]() |
