INDEPENDENCE SHOWDOWN OFFICIAL RESULTS FROM EL PASO

PhilBoxing.com

El Paso, TX (Sept 15) - An action packed night of world championship boxing from the El Paso Coliseum kicked off Mexican Independence Day with several Mexican fighters celebrating victories that showed their independence. The event, which aired on ESPN Deportes was co-promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions and Promociones Del Pueblo.

In the main event of the evening, WBC Featherweight Champion Jhonny Gonzalez successfully defended his title against the tough and experienced Rogers Mtagwa. Gonzalez came out swinging and defeated his opponent via TKO at 2:15 into the second round. With the win, Gonzalez improves to 50 wins and only 7 losses, 44 of which have come by way of knockout.

Javier Molina improved his undefeated record to 9-0, with 4 KO's against possibly the hardest test of his career in John Revish when he defeated Revish by unanimous decision in a 6-round contest. The undefeated Mexican US Olympian had his twin brother, Oscar, a member of the Mexican Olypmic boxing team, in his corner.

In a battle of two Mexican veterans, who brought a total of 83 previous bouts to the ring, Miguel "Mickey" Roman dropped Antonio Jose Meza with a body shot to the left side only 2:09 into the very first round. Roman's record now stands at 35-8, 27 KO's.

In another exciting bout that pinned two Mexicans against one another, Antonio Escalante was able to do one better (second, that is) than Miguel "Mickey" Roman, when he finished his opponent, Pipino Cuevas Jr. 2:08 seconds into the first round. The referee was forced to step in and stop the beating Cuevas Jr. was receiving, improving Escalante's record to 24-4, 15 KO's, while Cuevas Jr.'s record falls to 13-8, 11 KO's.

The card aslo featured several home town prospects. While Escalante was able to stop his opponent one second faster than Roman's 2:09 first-round KO, El Paso's Carlos Villa was able to shave a whole minute off of Romans time, when he stopped Javier Nunez via TKO only 1:09 into round number one. Villa, continues the undefeated start to his career, now 3-0, 2 KO's.

El Paso's Joel Garcia improves his record to 3-0, 1 KO after defeating Ricky Lacefield by UD in a four-round attraction.

Also from El Paso, Jennifer Han improves her record to 4-1-1 by defeating Kerri Hill by UD in the lone female bout of the evening.
