Pacquiao upstages Marquez in Mexico
By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Sun, 11 Sep 2011

It was not just a press tour to promote the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez trilogy. The fourth and last stop of the media hype held in Mexico City Thursday was a reaffirmation of the eight-division champion?s status as a global superstar.
Marquez who thought the party staged at the sacred Monumento dela Revolucion would be his wound up being upstaged by Pacquiao in Manila, New York and Los Angeles. As it turned out, the estimated crowd of 50,000 mobbed and cheered the reigning pound-for-pound king more than their own son.
The 38-year-old world lightweight kingpin was, in fact, reduced to mere spectator in the event where he was supposed to be the main attraction.Reports coming from the Aztec country said even members of the Mexican Parliament were captivated by Pacquiao?s charm during his visit prior to the press conference.
Pacquiao, indeed, is the ?King of the Boxing World.? a fact that, surely, would?ve sent claimant Floyd Mayweather Jr. gnashing his teeth in envy.
No less than Mexican long-serving president of the World Boxing Council was amazed by his countrymen?s reception to the World Boxing Organization welterweight belt-holder when he said in a statement: ? I thought that I should mention the impact that Manny made in Mexico City. More than 50,000 people stood for hours at the Monument of the Revolution waiting for the announced press conference. No one has ever before had such an attendance.?
?Manny has become a Mexican hero, even when he has defeated so many Mexicans and only Eric Morales beat him once,? Sulaiman, the WBC head since the 70s, said.
