PhilBoxing.com Tue, 04 Apr 2006
Filipino fight fans will be in for a grand treat when Solar Sports channel telecasts live the championship bouts of two Filipino stars--Rodel Mayol and Malcolm Tu?acao--on May 6 straight from the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
The deal was firmed up last week between top executives of Solar Sports and Yasuo Matsuoka, the manager of both Mayol and Tu?acao.
The undefeated Mayol (22-0, 17 KO's), ranked no. 1 minimumweight by the WBC, will challenge WBC minimumweight kingpin Eagle Kyowa (15-1, 6 KO's) in the main event of a card being put up by the Kadoebi Jewel Promotions.
Rodel Mayol (left) and Malcolm Tunacao (right) are joined by Solar Sports executives and their manager Yasuo Matsuoka (2nd from right) during the signing of the agreement for the coverage of their May 6 bouts.
The Mayol-Kyowa showdown is being touted as one of the most explosive and exciting match-ups between small men in recent years, with boxing experts having differing opinions on who will prevail.
One school of thought puts Kyowa as the favorite, owing to his vast championship experience, while another considers Mayol superior, owing to his superior power and skills.
In the chief support, OPBF bantam boss Malcolm 'Eagle Eye" Tu?acao defends his title for the second time against Yasuo Kijima, a stablemate of Kyowa, in another 12-round war.
The southpaw Tu?acao (19-1-3-, 13 KO's) is expected to have his hands full against Kijima, a 29-fight veteran who is ranked no. 10 by the OPBF.
