VILORIA-AGUIRRE REMATCH IN THE WORKS!
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 29 Mar 2006
World Boxing Council light-flyweight champion Brian Viloria will most likely defend his title for the second time in a grudge rematch with Jose Antonio Aguirre, whom he had beaten last time out after 12 rounds of grueling action at the Alladin Casino in Las Vegas.
Reports coming out of Mexico indicate that representatives from both camps are currently undergoing negotiations for a much-awaited return battle, with no less than Mexican legend Erik Morales, Aguirre's manager, reportedly expressing interest in another 12-rounder.
"These are developments that encourages me. Erik (Morales) has confidence in being able to negotiate for a rematch with the champion," informed Aguirre, the long-time WBC minimumweight champion. The Tabasco native is reportedly now training for the possible rematch.
Filipino Juanito Rubillar, the mandatory challenger to Viloria's title, has been lobbying with the Mexico-based WBC to give him a crack at Viloria's title, although the latter had initially balked at the idea of fighting a compatriot.
Gabriel "Bebot" Elorde Jr, who manages Rubillar, had earlier been informed by the WBC that his ward is next in line for Viloria, and even dangled a six-figure purse for the 'Hawaiian Punch' to defend his title at the Elorde Sports Complex against Rubillar.
However, another highly-placed WBC official had labeled the prospect of a Viloria-Rubillar showdown as 'doubtful' at best, apparently taking into account Rubillar's marketability, or lack thereof.
Viloria had received last Saturday a special award at the Flash Elorde Banquet of Champions, for his achievements as a world champion.
