WEARY PACQUIAO GETS 'GOLDEN PARACHUTE' DEAL, BUT CANCELS JAPAN TRIP By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 04 Feb 2006 Pound-for-pound icon Manny Pacquiao's energy is so boundless that it's only now he has felt the rigors of fighting Erik Morales and giving in to requests by his multitude of fans, as the Filipino superstar decided to scrap his scheduled trip to Japan today to spend more time "to rest and heal his body." The southpaw Pacquiao was supposed to fly to Japan with his close friend Rex "Wakee" Salud today on board PAL PR 438 bound for Nagoya, Japan at 1:30PM, but a source close to Pacquiao indicated the boxing idol "was overfatigued" following his visit to Cebu City where Pacquiao paid a special courtesy call on Mayor Tomas Osmena aside from giving in to fans' requests for photo-ops and autographs. The Japan trip was originally planned to allow Pacman to cheer for two Filipinos--OPBF champs Randy Suico and Malcolm Tunacao--who are both defending their titles tomorrow in Nagoya, Japan. Pacquiao and Salud left Cebu for Manila yesterday on board a private plane owned by San Miguel Corporation head Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco. However, even before the duo could step into SMC's private plane yesterday, Pacquiao was already all smiles after the company, one of the country's certified blue-chips, reportedly dangled a hefty package for Pacquiao that includes a virtual 'golden parachute' that would take care of the boxing hero well long after his retirement in boxing. "The deal includes a P2.5 Million annual package for Pacquiao for the next ten years after he retires from boxing. That is over and above a certain percentage that SMC will give him for every SMC product he endorses," Salud told this writer in an interview. The deal virtually puts Pacquiao and his family's future in good shape, considering a handful of former world champs in the country who end up broke and penniless.
