Villanueva, Asenjo Post Wins in GenSan Boxing PhilBoxing.com Sun, 27 Feb 2011 Lorenzo Villanueva. General Santos City - World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental champions Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva and Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, both of the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato, won over their respective opponents in contrasting fashion Saturday night here in the city which has produced great world boxing champions. Undefeated featherweight Villanueva rolled over his opponent, journeyman Ruben Sentillanosa, like a runaway freight train flooring his opponent twice in the first round before finally ending the fight early in the second round of a scheduled 8 with a thunderous left that snapped back the head of Sentillanosa. Referee Felizardo Resma mercifully ended the fight without even bothering to count declaring Villanueva winner by knockout. It was 24-year-old Villanueva's 18th KO in 19 wins. The 21-year-old Asenjo, on the other hand, needed all of 8 rounds to eke out a 75-74 victory over Jongjong Ponteras in 8 rounds of a fight that was considered a tune up bout for the North Cotabato boxer who holds the WBO miniflyweight Oriental title. Following a thunderous left that sent Ponteras on the seat of his pants in the first round, Asenjo became overconfident and earned a point deduction and the ire of the crowd when he hit Ponteras after the bell had rang ending round 2. Ponteras feigned a knockdown and stayed on the ropes apparently hoping that his dramatics would earn a disqualification for Asenjo. Referee Jun Heramil, however, only slapped Asenjo a one point deduction. A furious Ponteras, however, came back in Round 3 and engaged Asenjo in a toe to toe battle and scored a knockdown. But that appeared to be the only highlight of Ponteras' performance inside the ring with the diminutive Oriental champion who controlled the fight to score a unanimous decision victory. Another Braveheart boxer who saw action Friday night, undefeated junior featherweight Rey Juntilla, met his match in the young Ernie Sanchez of Gen. Santos City losing by majority decision in an exciting bout that saw both fighters score a knockdown each. The General Santos City boxing card was staged by ZAMAN Boxing Promotions to mark the Kalilangan Festival of the city which ends Sunday. |
