ABAP Approves Boxing Events In Guimaras

JORDAN, Guimaras, Dec. 24 (PNA) -- The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) gave its nod to Guimaras officials' request to hold boxing matches in the island and thus help aspiring boxers find a place in the sun.
Spurred by the success of boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, Guimaras is aching to produce the country's next boxing superstar.
Initial talks revealed that age genres will be adopted to guarantee fair and safe amateur boxing bouts. For example, the Kids Category will be for 11-12 year-old participants only, while on the other hand, the 13-14 ages will be bracketed under the Schoolboys Category.
Finally, the Junior Category will feature 15-16 year-old amateur aspirants.
Adhering to stringent rules, ABAP said it will require applicants to pass through a medical examination before they are allowed to climb up the ring.
Meanwhile, Provincial Board Member German Gacho, leaning on a sterling performance as public official, was reelected as president of the League of Baranggay Captains in Guimaras Island composed of five municipalities.
Gacho, who ran for the position unopposed, will continue to sit as Ex-Officio Member for the provincial government of Guimaras under Governor Felipe Hilan Nava.
It would be recalled that it was Gacho who initially proposed to revive amateur boxing contests in the province.
